Last year around this time I came up with an idea: to invite others to focus on joyful living, just for a month. I clearly had some winter blues. You might even remember this.

Anyway, I called it A Month of Joy. I had no idea that that would be the beginning of other courses or programs or whatever you want to call them.

From the positive experience I had with this month, I created a month on self-compassion, which I turned into a 12 week program a little bit later on. That one actually only finished the beginning of this month. (I had a Xmas gift for the participants of some bonus materials).

But what to do with the materials from my Month of Joy? Well, I realise that reconnecting with our own joy is never a straight line, just one way or recipe. It hides in many emotions, and is accessible in that many ways.

What for me brings excitement or fun or play might be the opposite for you. And that is what I love. We are all so different and yet so the same. I cannot tell you exactly what works for you, I can show you how I get there, how I navigate. Coming from depression in my younger years to embracing life, LIVING life, navigating is what I have learned.

So, grab your life vest, put it on and jump in that boat. Navigate your heart out. You are worth it and joy is worth you.

When I was younger (as if I am super old now😂), I didn’t want to set any goals for myself because before that, when I was even younger, I had put myself the goal that I wanted to be a lawyer working for Greenpeace. And I went for it, I studied really a lot, had a strict regime, gave up a lot, lost friendships, suffered because of it, thinking all would be worth it. I got a law degree, despite my dyslexia.

That was my reference for what I had to do if I set a goal. And I refused. I did not want to put myself through that again. It was HARD and painful. I think I used up my quota of discipline 😂.

Now that I am in my second phase in life, calmed down a bit and giving less f #@>= I see I have reframed this whole idea of goal setting.

Goals are now an indication of where I want to go, figuring out steps, adjusting them, letting spontaneity and fun lead. With a massive dose of self compassion for the failures I experience along the way. I have turned hard goals into soft goals, making them a guideline, fully open to ending somewhere completely different.

My heart in tact, fun along the way!

So when we catch ourselves being harsh in our pursuit of goals or resolutions, let’s show ourselves some grace and allow for failure. They make it fun! If everything went perfect life would be boring!

Goals… a love-hate relationship for me. New year is a great time to make resolutions. That’s the main sentiment isn’t it?!

Previously I would obide by those rules. Made them with my head: exercise, weight…. Bla bla bla… my heart was never really in them and of course, they never sticked. I didn’t understand why…😂 ah, the ignorance and innocence of youth…

Now I know with my whole being that no resolution or goal will never happen if it is solely made by the head. The heart is an essential component. So, as a professional ‘against the grain’ type person or doing everything ‘my own way’, I don’t do new years resolutions anymore. If I make any resolution, it’s that moment it starts, well at least internally.

Through experience I have learned that when I put my heart into it, my mind and everything I have, they come true. It feels more like when I make that decision, every cell of me makes that decision and yellow energy flows in that direction. That is how it feels anyway.

My husband and I made that goal, decision to want to experience owning a house, not knowing how or when. Things started to fall into place and we have up our rental property in October 2024, now being in the final stage of buying a property. It was not January 1st, it somewhere in spring 2024.

Now we are in January, and apparently it’s a blue month. Loads of people make resolutions with their head and are, just like me, made them with the head, not the heart.

So if you made a decision with your head, based on a critical voice coming from there, then please give yourself a big hug. Acknowledge the voice, listen to it, show yourself some compassion. Then have a quick check in with the heart. Involve the heart, let it lead and let the mind do the practical thinking of actions to take. Just involve the heart.

We started Oct 1st with awareness. Through diving in did we start to see more of who we are, how we treat ourselves. And also how we can love and support ourselves through the harder times, and also celebrating in the good times. All is about balance!

Receiving is such a wonderful thing, sometimes easier than giving because we have to be open. We truly can receive as much as we allow, as we can give ourselves.

So how much do we open up, allow ourselves? I want to go for 100% because I want to LIVE life. And you? See if you can give yourself something every day, a smile, a high five, a loving word, and notice if you open up more, allowing to receive…

Animals can be such a wonderful point in one’s day for joy, laughter, love….
Give them a cuddle and say something lovely and then we go to a human and do exactly the same, cuddle and sweet words!

Do you remember a time when you had to work hard to create a movement in your body it didnt yet know? And after a while all of a sudden your body understands and does it, fluid and flawless? That thrill?
Seeing someone else in that process, knowing that moment will come at some point, for that person?

That is joy too! Nostalgia can be a great way in.
