Hello and welcome to my page, my name is Melanie (Mel) and I am a counsellor based in Exeter, Devon. My counselling practice is Chatty Kathy Counselling, named lovingly after my mom Kathy who sadly died from breast cancer in 2021, I am proudly carrying her name. I am a warm and friendly integrative counsellor which means I am trained in different therapeutic approaches (Person Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Gestalt, Trauma techniques) and can draw from each approach to meet the needs of each individual person. I have experience working with adults, children and young people and have experience working with a wide range of issues including grief and loss, suicidal thoughts, self harm, work related stress, study pressures, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, su***de bereavement, managing difficult emotions, self-esteem and life goals. I have over 10 years experience working for the NHS in different roles and in more recent years I have worked in su***de prevention, community mental health, su***de bereavement support and counselling. I can offer face to face appointments in Exeter but also offer online and telephone sessions so it doesn't matter if you don't live locally or would prefer to have sessions from home; I am also insured to work with clients outside the UK. I am accredited by the National Counselling Society (NCS) and work within their ethics and guidelines to ensure a safe and professional working relationship. I am still working on my page so please check in regularly to see what's new. I will continue to add posts on mental health, emotional issues and wellbeing videos and tips/coping strategies for those interested. If you would like to have a chat to see if I am the right counsellor for you, please contact me. I know it's a big step to get help and I am here to make the process as easy as possible for you.

Here are some tiny self care ideas that are easy to fit into a busy life. Making time to ground yourself, recharge your batteries and disconnect from everything will help you manage stress better and give you more energy.

🌻 For the mind

Do one thing today, just because it makes you happy.

Switch off every device for an hour, free yourself from social media, messages and emails.

🌻For the body

Inhale an upbeat smell, peppermint is good or my favourite is sun cream.

Make one small change to your diet for the week, such as have one extra glass of water each day.

🌻For the soul

Treat yourself to a home spa, take a long bath, sit around reading magazines in your dressing gown.

Go on a beauty hunt - find 5 unexpected beautiful things on a regular journey such as on the way to work, school run, to the shops.

🌻 You can also give yourself 2 minutes to watch the waves I filmed for you. if you want to, you can focus on your breathing while watching the waves, taking a deep breath in through your nose and a longer breath out through your mouth, this will send calming signals through your body.

Have a positive week 💛

I am pleased to share the following review, it is much appreciated:

"Mel really has helped me with my anxiety and my relationship troubles and that has allowed me to navigate what has been a very tough period for me. I’ve found myself feeling more confident in myself and my decision making as she really has reassured me and helped me to feel I am capable and I can be better. I’m so glad I reached out and I’m so grateful for the support I received when making such a difficult but so worth while step towards improving myself"

Thank you to everyone that takes the time to write a review or give me verbal feedback. Feedback helps me to reflect on my practice and continually improve the way I work. ❤️

I am pleased to share the following two recent reviews:

"She is very understanding and takes time to ask the right questions to find out what the problems are and how to work on them."

"Melanie is an exceptional practitioner in her field who employs great care in her communication, leaving a profound impact on those she interacts with. If you're anticipating a significant life transition, she comes highly recommended as the finest therapist I've ever worked with, in addition to being a delightful human being."

As a reflective practitioner I always welcome feedback and appreciate people taking the time to do this. ❤️

💕 Spreading positivity: Some of my younger clients have been decorating pebbles with me to spread messages of hope and positivity across Devon this summer. The first group has been hidden today in Budleigh Salterton. If you have found a pebble please post a photo of it and let us know where you found it. Let's see how far we can spread the positive vibes. 💕

"I am living in a very difficult time during the war in the Ukraine, just half an hour away from the front line. Melanie McVeagh is helping me to overcome panic and fear, to find motivation and to overcome difficulties in my relationship. I really feel that she supports and respects me."

If a child tells you they want to be an astronaut when they grow up, ask them "what planet will you visit first?"

The inspiration will lead them to be the best version of themselves, even if they change their goal along the way, the journey becomes important. Encourage a meaningful journey 🌈

🧘‍♀️Monday Mindfulness🧘

I have made a 2 minute video of the sea for YOU because you deserve a little break. Listen to the sea and the birds, watch the waves come in and out and cover the rocks. Breathe in deep through your nose and breathe out a longer breath through your mouth. It's just 2 minutes, everything else can wait, you are worth it.
