🎓 Highlights and upcoming dates for the veterinary community
Some of the highlights from September’s VETcpd Congress 2025 in Exeter, plus a diary of events in 2026:

📍 Congress recap

Practice managers heard from Peter Orpin (via Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons) about the forthcoming Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) final report on the veterinary sector, covering transparency, pricing, medicine supply and clinical performance audits.

Rising overheads were explored: staff shortages, part-time patterns, and higher cost of advanced treatments all factored into inflation in veterinary practices.

For rabbit care, John Chitty shared practical tips on reducing stress in clinic visits, emphasising waiting room setup, handling and familiar companions.

On the nutrition front, Nicola Lakeman reminded delegates on the nursing stream to challenge grain-free diet myths and educate owners on grains, fibre and balanced nutrition.

The exhibition zone was the largest yet, with our sponsor Elanco, Boehringer Ingelheim, Medifinance and others participating.

🌱 The veterinary profession joins forces for a greener future

A new era of collaboration is taking shape in the UK, as leading organisations unite to put sustainability at the heart of veterinary practice. Convened by Vet Sustain, the Veterinary Sustainability Roundtable (VSR) brings together businesses, charities, regulators, and universities in a groundbreaking partnership to drive meaningful environmental action across the sector.

🤝 A collective mission to regenerate the health of animals, people, and the planet

🌍 Three workstreams targeting Vet Sustain’s “six Ws” - welfare, wildlife, well-being, warming, waste, and water

🏢 Founding members include BVA, IVC Evidensia, CVS, VetPartners, Mars Veterinary Health, Dechra, and more

“This is an exciting journey for the veterinary sector,” says founding director David Black. “It’s about finding common ground and driving lasting change.”

Meanwhile, tech firm VET.CT has become one of only a handful of veterinary companies worldwide to have validated science-based net-zero targets. Its goals include cutting emissions by more than 50% within 10 years and reaching net-zero by 2050.

📣 “Climate change is not just an environmental issue, but a health issue,” says CEO Victoria Johnson.

“We aim to do all we can to protect the future health of the planet and the patients we serve.”

🏥 When medical innovation meets architectural empathy

In Mumbai, India, a new kind of veterinary clinic is redefining what specialist care can look like. The Skin Vet, founded by Dr Diu Somani, is the country’s first clinic dedicated exclusively to dermatology for pets. Designed by Gautam Shewa Architects, it blends advanced medical functionality with a calm, pet-friendly atmosphere.

🐾 Seamless epoxy floors resistant to scratches and spills

🌿 Natural light and warm wooden finishes for a stress-free environment

💡 A layout that prioritises efficiency, hygiene and comfort

Every design choice, from the ripple ceiling that softens sound to the intuitive flow between consultation and treatment, was made with both pets and people in mind. The result is a space that feels as caring as the medicine it delivers.

📣 “The Skin Vet sets a new standard for niche veterinary care by uniting medical innovation with architectural empathy.”

Did you know the first ever veterinary case notes date back over 4,000 years?

In this month’s European Eye, Alexia Yiannouli takes us deep into the history of veterinary medicine, right back to ancient Egypt.

🗺 While exploring the Library of Alexandria, she uncovers stories of the Kahun Papyrus (1825 BC), the earliest known documentation of veterinary care. From linen eye bandages for dogs to ancient surgical tools, the roots of modern practice run deeper than you might think.

🌍 This thought-provoking piece also reflects on Egypt’s current One Health strategy, linking past and present in a story that reminds us how interconnected animal, human, and environmental health truly is.
