❗️Black Triangles ❗️

Patients hate them. They have such a negative impact on the smile aesthetics and they can cause a lot of self-consciousness.

Why do they happen?

Black triangles are negative spaces between the teeth where there is no gum. This can happen for the following reasons:

1. Gum disease - it destroys the supporting bone which reduces around the tooth and then the gum follows. It is particularly seen in advanced gum disease, or when gum disease has been effectively treated and the gum inflammation shrinks down.
2. After straightening triangular shaped teeth: the teeth uncross and the space near the gum is left. This will often infil with gum over time, if it’s small. It can also be managed through reshaping the tooth (making it more square and then closing the space) or by using composite.
3. Triangular shaped teeth, particularly in lower front teeth.

Adding composite can hugely improve the aesthetics, as you can see. The smile is totally transformed - confidence regained!

This bride to be had had many treatments with other practitioners in the run up to her wedding including skin treatments, hair, lips (as you may notice in second photo) etc but she said the the thing she was most happiest with and the thing that made the most difference was her teeth.

When you hand the patient the mirror at the end of treatment and you get tears, you know you’ve done well for your patient. Thank you for your trust T!

✖️Unhappy with gaps between your teeth?✖️

No problem 😎

Many people dislike gaps between their teeth!

If closing spaces with Invisalign aligners isn’t an option, or your teeth are already in the right place but just ’too small,’ composite bonding can be such an impactful way to treat these - no drilling, no injections, great results (when done well of course!)

Don’t be deceived though - although it looks clean & simple, this case was very fiddly - it takes patience but is so worth it 👌🏽

🌟 What a beautiful result 🤩

On a side note - I honestly just absolutely love that this I am able to do this for my wonderful patients and take them on a journey to get their perfect smile - and as cheesy as that sounds - I feel so fortunate that this is my job and so grateful to everyone who trusts me with their mouths 🙏

Back to this patient…

What my patient didn’t like:
✖️Top teeth sticking out
✖️Chipped top 2 front teeth
✖️Bottom teeth crowded

Things I see as a dentist, which we aim to improve, that you might not initially notice :

▪️ Can you also see that the top jaw is narrowed in at the sides? This makes the smile narrower.
This is partly due to a rotated pre-molar tooth.

▪️ Can you also see how the instanding tooth on the bottom front jaw also picks up more staining? This is because the toothbrush might miss it during brushing as it’s more difficult to clean.

▪️ Can you see how the bottom teeth are at different heights/ levels? Often people don’t realise that Invisalign can level teeth off. They ask for their teeth to be shaved to the same height - particularly lower front teeth. This isn’t necessary!

What we did:
🔹 Invisalign tooth straightening (including wearing elastic bands on the teeth to help rotate that premolar and help improve the bite)

🔹 Whitening

🔹 Bonding to top 2 front teeth.

🔹 Retainers to keep everything straight!

NOTE: I would have loved to have contoured the edges of those lower front teeth ever so slightly to make them even more ‘perfect’ but my patient was happy as they are ☺️

This lovely lady wanted a small modification to her chin.

In the ‘before’ photos you can see a depression, or cleft, in the centre of the chin.

We only needed to use 1ml of filler here to give her chin a lovely contour which is evident when you look from the front and also from the partial profile.

You can also see that it improves the appearance of the jawline definition.

Less is always more 😉

🤩 What a difference whitening and space closure can make!

This guy was unhappy with the spaces between his teeth.

We discussed the benefits of orthodontics in depth (a better aesthetic outcome so the teeth don’t point forwards as much; need for less composite and therefore less maintenance; a better bite to reduce chances of chipping etc). However, he declined this option.

So, we did a ‘trial smile’ in temporary material to ensure he was happy with how the smile would look before we went ahead.

He then whitened the teeth at home for 2 weeks prior to placing the composite in one session. We also provided a night guard to help prevent chipping.

Composite bonding can’t be done in every case without prior straightening the teeth but here it has worked nicely 😎
