Common Early Signs of Dementia
These symptoms may appear gradually and can sometimes be mistaken for normal ageing:
1. Memory problems
Forgetting recent events or conversations.
Repeatedly asking the same questions.
Misplacing items in unusual places (e.g., putting keys in the fridge).
2. Difficulty with familiar tasks
Struggling to follow a recipe, pay bills, or use common household items.
3. Language difficulties
Trouble finding the right words.
Stopping mid-sentence or repeating phrases.
4. Disorientation
Getting lost in familiar places.
Confusing times, dates, or seasons.
5. Poor judgment
Making unusual financial decisions.
Neglecting personal hygiene or safety.
6. Changes in mood or personality
Becoming easily irritable, anxious, suspicious, or depressed.
7. Withdrawal
Avoiding social activities or hobbies once enjoyed.
8. Difficulty with planning and problem-solving
Struggling to follow the steps in a plan or handle numbers.
Important Note: Having one or two of these issues doesn’t necessarily mean dementia - stress, lack of sleep, medications, or other health problems can cause similar symptoms.
If you or someone you know is experiencing multiple persistent changes, it’s best to consult a doctor. They might conduct memory tests, blood tests, and brain scans to determine the cause.
