🙌🏻
It’s a hard knock life or at least it can be!
What I have learnt is that when I take time out to take care of myself and my needs I find I look, feel, move and even think more like myself again.
Gone is the tension and holding on, the harried over thinking, nervous system over stimulation and overdoing that can come from juggling lots of different needs and demands. I’m back to being me, thinking more clearly, breathing more easily, feeling more grounded and in my body. I feel more empowered to pace myself as I need, take my time to consider and reflect on a problem or situation, instead of responding reactively, in a panic from a place unease, anxiety, discomfort and instability.
I really appreciate taking time and space to recover from the firefighting and endless strategising how to tackle the next or latest challenge coming from left field that currently comes with being a SEND parent.
Taking care of my own needs as a priority, by regularly tending and befriending my nervous system and seeking out support to resource myself is absolutely necessary for me able to keep taking care of my loved ones and ensuring the wheels on the bus keep turning…
Running on empty is a real risk to health and well-being for anyone but as women we are especially susceptible to putting ourselves last, completely overlooking our own needs and neglecting our own well-being in the interests of others, whether at work, at home in our relationships with family or friends and even in our communities. It’s a reality for many of us and can quietly creep in when we have a lot of responsibility in our personal and professional lives.
➡️ It doesn’t have to be this way!
There is an alternative approach to being a woman that doesn’t involve abandoning yourself and your needs, heading for the hills or disappearing into an ashram for months on end nor completely abandoning work and personal responsibilities.
Even if living completely stress free realistically is unlikely to be achievable for most of us, and acknowledging that this may not even be desirable, we can work on changing our relationship to stress and busyness as well as our responses to the many calls on our attention and energy.
By working with a coach on our relationship with ourselves, exploring our core values and beliefs as well as evaluating what is and isn’t working or serving us well, we can find ways of working that honour our needs, wants and needs through identifying strengths and abilities and learning to work in alignment with our true selves rather than suppressing ourselves and our needs in favour of striving for supposed superwoman status.
