Your nervous system directly affects your hormones.
Your nervous system is constantly asking one question in the background: “Am I safe?”
And depending on that answer, it changes how it functions.
When your system feels under threat (stress, overwhelm, constant tension, even just a busy mind), it shifts into survival mode.
In that state, your body prioritises:
adrenaline
cortisol
staying alert
And it quietly puts other things on the back burner:
hormone balance
digestion
repair
long-term health processes
Not because anything is broken but because your body is trying to protect you.
When your system feels safe, everything changes.
Your body can:
regulate hormones more effectively
digest properly
repair and restore
come back into balance
This is why it’s not just about reducing your external toxic load… it’s also about reducing your internal stress load.
Things like:
slowing your breathing
allowing your body to relax
not reacting to every sensation as a threat
These aren’t small things.
They are direct signals to your system: “We’re safe.”
And when the body feels safe it starts to work properly again.
This doesn’t mean stress is bad or that we should never feel it.
It just means: chronic 'on edge' states (which most of us are all the time!!) can keep the body in a loop where it never fully switches into repair mode.
So alongside everything else…
Maybe ask: “Am I giving my body enough signals of safety each day?” ❤️
These are some ways to send your body a signal of safety:
Caring self talk - ditch the inner critic once and for all. This is a massive one.
Slow your breathing - longer exhales
Gentle movement - walking, stretching, pottering
Turn the news off, reduce scrolling
Humming, singing or using your voice
Taking small quiet moments
Being around calm, safe people
Safe, reassuring human touch (massage or hugs)
Being with a calm pet
Walking in nature (along as you feel safe)
