Visual Stress and Sheet Music

Visual Stress affects so many aspects of life and learning.

Even the most proficient musicians can struggle with sheet music.

The spacing of the staff (stave) and the multiple notes can be an extreme trigger for Visual Stress.

Using the correct coloured overlay on top of the sheets can help reduce sysmptoms and improve fluency when playing.

Why does my child melt down in supermarkets?

Neurodivergence means busy environments can be very difficult. However there may be other reasons why Supermarkets cause such distress to your child.

Visual Stress -
As humans we are designed to be in natural environments. With soft edges, natural colours and light from the sun.

Supermarkets are extremely stressful on the visual system, as well as the entire sensory system.

Consider your regular supermarket -
• Harsh lighting
• Rows and Aisles of products
• Smells pumped in
• Background music/ announcements and people talking. ‘Beeps’ from check outs and scanners.
• High contrast colours to draw our attention to certain products

Overall a sensory nightmare. 

If your child is Neurodivergent they are also more likely to suffer from Visual Stress.

Life can be made easier with the use of precision colour to support in all areas of life.

The first step is to have your child screened for Visual Stress with a Pattern glare test (where safe) and an Intuitive Overlay Assessment.

If your child (or infact you) are experiencing the benefits and feel that colour could help in all areas of life then I can sign post to services locally who can provide Precision Tinted Lenses.

This process involves an assessment using a colorimeter. It works differently to overlays as the light entering the eye is ‘refracted’ and not ‘reflected’.

It is not uncommon for the colour of Precision Tinted Lenses to be completely different to that of their overlay.

This precision tint is then produced by Cerium Visual Technologies and incorporates any spectacle prescription required.

Unfortunately due to the cost of a colorimeter it is not a service I can offer yet, but hope to do so in future.

I will provide a full report of my findings from an overlay assessment and this can be used to access a Colorimetry assessment by a registered provider.

Grow and See - Visual Stress Screening

Is your child struggling with reading? No clear explanation?

Do they skip lines? Or re- read the same line?

Have they said the page looks blurry? Or that words move?

Perhaps they have said some words stand out more than others? Or there are patterns or shapes when they look at text?

Visual Stress occurs in roughly 30% of the population, and is very common with neuro- divergence and Dyslexia.

Visual Stress and daily life.

Having Visual Stress impacts daily life.

Take a minute to think of nature;
Soft edges
Natural colours.
Low contrast
Open spaces.

Now think of a busy town or city;
Harsh straight lines
Buildings are cuboid
Windows are square
Roads are straight. Dark. With high contrast white lines.

We are not built to observe the harsh brutal structures that are part of modern everyday life.

Nature is kind. Soft.

The modern world can be extremely harsh and daunting when you have visual stress.

If you struggle with everyday life, being in these harsh spaces, and we identify Visual Stress, you can progress to Precision Tinted Lenses.

These are worn as coloured spectacles.

This requires a Full Colorimetry Examination and I can provide the necessary report to take to a registered practitioner, and signpost to the right place.
