๐Ÿฉบโœจ Hysteroscopy: a little camera with a big job

This post breaks down what a hysteroscopy is and why someone might need one โ€” because womb care shouldnโ€™t feel mysterious or scary ๐Ÿ’›

Iโ€™ve actually had a hysteroscopy myself to investigate a possible submucosal fibroid, which was then resected during a later procedure. Yesโ€ฆ doctors get procedures too ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ˜… Weโ€™ll discuss that another time.

This is part of a series, so next up weโ€™ll be talking honestly and sensitively about:
โžก๏ธ pain relief options
โžก๏ธ possible complications

I understand that hysteroscopy can be triggering for some people and upsetting, especially if youโ€™ve had a negative experience. I hope to open up the space to safely discuss our experiences and take some learning forward to improve care for all.

Furthermore, Iโ€™ll be showing and explaining a device used to resect some fibroids in an upcoming post ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ”ง

So keep your eyes peeled and stay tunedโ€ฆ

Save, share, and send this to someone whoโ€™s been told they โ€œmight need a hysteroscopyโ€ ๐Ÿ’ฌโœจ

๐Ÿฉธโœจ I spotted (sorry not sorry) in a Scottish library toiletโ€ฆ FREE period products. No questions. No shame. Just dignity. โœจ๐Ÿฉธ

This is what it looks like when a country says: periods are normal, and no one should have to struggle because of them.

๐ŸŒ Period poverty is real โ€” many people miss school, work, and daily activities because they canโ€™t afford pads or tampons.
๐Ÿด Scotland changed the game.

In 2020, Scotland became the FIRST country in the world to pass legislation ensuring free access to period products for anyone who needs them.
๐Ÿ“œ The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021 was passed unanimously
๐Ÿšป And from August 2022, councils and public places (like libraries, schools & universities) were legally required to provide them โ€” for free, forever.

No means testing.
No embarrassment.
Just equity, dignity, and basic healthcare ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ This is what progressive public health policy looks like.
โœจ The rest of the world โ€” take notes.

๐Ÿ’‰ Weight loss jabs like Ozempic and Mounjaro are everywhere right now โ€” helping with appetite control and blood sugar balance by slowing how fast your stomach empties.

But hereโ€™s the bit many people donโ€™t know ๐Ÿ‘€ โ€” that same effect on your gut can change how your body absorbs oral contraception. Yep, your pill might not work as well, especially when youโ€™re first starting or increasing your dose.

So if youโ€™re on the jab and the pill, itโ€™s worth chatting to your doctor about extra protection. Safety first, always ๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’ฌ

โœจ Things I wish I knew about periodsโ€ฆ

Several of us have been there at one point wondering all sorts about our periods right? Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ve asked Dr Google a question or twoโ€ฆ letโ€™s have a look at some of these:

1. Debiltating period pains:

Painful periods are common. The severity of the pain can differ for every, from mild to so severe it affects your day to day life. Some individuals even have to take time off work or school. It this pain is so bad itโ€™s affecting your quality of life, you should 100000% see your . ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€โš•๏ธ

2. Often people use the terms โ€œmenstrual cycleโ€ and periodโ€ interchangeably when they are two separate things. The โ€˜menstrual cycleโ€™ is the whole lot - from your hormone levels rising and releasing an egg to your lining breaking down and you bleeding for anything between 2-7 days. Your โ€˜periodโ€™ is the time when you are bleeding. I used to think that a โ€˜normal menstrual cycleโ€™ would be 28 days and if I was over or under this, then something was wrong! In fact cycles can be anything from 21 to 35 days! Stress can delay your period and so can .. pregnancy! ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿฝ

3. You can still get if you have s*xual in*******se whilst on your period. You may early and if there happen to be s***m lingering around (as they can survive 5 days in the reproductive tract!) it may find your egg and bingo! ๐ŸŽฏ

4. Periods are not embarrassing or . I was speaking to a male friend about something and he said, โ€œdo lots of women have gynaecological issues or problems with their periods?โ€ And I said, โ€œyes loads!โ€ And he said, โ€œoh, no one ever talks about itโ€. And there lies the problem. There is a stigma of shame or embarrassment which cloaks periods and therefore makes many people suffer in silence. are natural and normal. Itโ€™s only by talking about it raising awareness about it that we can break down these cultural vibes.

If any of this was helpful, please give it a share and letโ€™s spread the word!! ๐Ÿค๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค May 2024 is Womenโ€™s Health Month. This is an awareness event recognising the several physical and mental issues experienced by women (and people assigned female at birth!)

Itโ€™s important to empower people to put their health first. From a lack of screening uptake, the postpartum period, menstruation in the work place and discussing shames and tabooโ€™s and validating your severe period pain as not โ€œnormalโ€.

I read that โ€œempathyโ€ and โ€œeducationโ€ are the tools required to turn around opinions and biased views on womenโ€™s health. Letโ€™s have a chat this May and recognise the importance of womenโ€™s health.

Hereโ€™s a question that Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve asked at one point in your life. Perhaps youโ€™ve been too embarrassed to go to your doctor or ask a friend so youโ€™ve googled it to work out what you can do!

Believe it or not, itโ€™s super common to have abnormal discharge at some point in your life.

Here are a few common reasons why! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿฉท If you do have abnormal discharge, why should you go to your doctor?

1. Well itโ€™s often quite straight forward to diagnose certain conditions with a simple va**nal swab or if you have a p***s, a swab of the discharge or sometimes a urine sample! This swab can often be taken yourself in private.

2. Your doctor may have seen this a million times before and be able to calm your worries and reassure you.

3. If your discharge is caused by an STI like chlamydia or herpes, often treatment early is the most efficient and best thing. Chlamydia left untreated can, in particularly for women cause pelvic inflammatory disease or infertility problems in future. Herpes is a painful s*xually transmitted infection that sometimes can be lessened by early anti viral medication.

Ge***al Herpes ๐Ÿฆ

Ge***al Herpes is a s*xually transmitted infection that once contracted, stays with you for life. It is caused by the HSV (Heroes simplex) virus. Although your symptoms of ge***al lesions or ulcers can come and go, the virus lives hiding in your nerve cells until a time again where itโ€™ll reactivate and cause those annoying, painful symptoms.

Did you know though, that 50% ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๐˜ด๐˜บ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ด!

๐Ÿ’• Nearly 70% of people by the age of 25 will have one type of the herpes simplex virus (type 1 or type 2).

There are some treatments that are recommended or advised to help with the symptoms and severity such as:

๐ŸŒŸ Aciclovir or other antiviral medications
๐ŸŒŸ Paracetamol, ibuprofen or codeine-based painkillers
๐ŸŒŸ Saline baths
๐ŸŒŸ Using water when peeing to pour over your ge***als to soothe the pain

You can be tested for ge***al herpes if you have an active outbreak of sores or lesions but cannot be tested for one if you have no symptoms. One can also spread the virus even if donโ€™t have symptoms - this is called via viral shedding. Ge***al Herpes is contacted by s*xual contact with the ge***als of someone who has herpes - it can be through va**na, oral or a**l s*x.
