Happy International Women's Day 2024. Today, we celebrate the remarkable contributions and achievements of women around the globe. It's a day to honour their resilience, strength, and the invaluable role they play in shaping a more equal and progressive world.

Every year, World Obesity Day lands on the 4th of March. During this time, many different companies and projects look to tackle obesity, working together to see what can be done around the ongoing worldwide struggles with obesity.

Most importantly, we should view obesity as a medical condition – not a personal failing. Obesity should be treated with care and respect, like any other medical condition. There are many factors which can contribute to obesity; today, we’ll look at some of them, and what can be done going forward. https://bit.ly/3wFeo9V

We know that nutrition and movement are key elements in any weight care journey - but are you aware how important your mindset is, and what kind of psychological barriers you may face when embarking on a weight care journey?

We aim to answer these and many other questions related to mindset in our fourth podcast, with our CBT-specialist Samantha Wallace joining Sarah and Rebecca for what might be our most personal podcast yet!

Join us as we learn into cognitive behavioral therapy and it’s role in weight management. Along the way, we address the myth of willpower and discuss how we can start accepting that, even if we are trying to change our habits for improved health, we are, as individuals, good enough already.

54% of people that materially reduce their weight see a change in attitudes and reduction in weight stigma towards them. Here are some quotes directly from our Simple Online Pharmacy customers, on the differences they experienced after losing weight:

"People take you more seriously when you are at a healthier weight, I managed to get a promotion at work after my weight loss and became "the face" of my company I work for"
“I always felt judged for being obese, when dealing with people they saw the fat first and not me as a person. I was not taken seriously by anyone. I felt like a second class citizen”
“I am not an invisible fat middle aged woman anymore”
"People who would blank me due to my weight now want to interact with me"

One even said "My mother has a little more respect for me"

Weight stigma and discrimination is much more pervasive in all aspects of society than most of us realise, including in the workplace. With all the “noise” about the health implications of obesity there is a danger that we over index on this, without also understanding the human side to this condition.

In our second podcast (https://bit.ly/3tUbbSQ), we speak to Stuart W. Flint, Associate Professor of Psychology at University of Leeds. Dr Flint has conducted wide ranging research into the psychology of obesity and weight-stigma and many of his insights were jaw dropping - these two are now burned into my consciousness;

👉 Weight stigma conditioning starts from the age of 3.
The Fat controller in Thomas the Tank Engine, Daddy pig in Peppa Pig, Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter, Ursula in the Little Mermaid; all examples of how we do this, probably without realising. The societal narrative starts young and escalates from there.

👉 Weight-stigma, particularly in healthcare has been proven to lead to physical ill-health, as well as mental health issues.

Any parent, people leader, DEI leader, recruiter, or colleague should listen to what Dr Stuart and Sarah Le Brocq have to say in this podcast. Is this happening in your workplace?

Did you know that 30% of brits will be setting New Year’s resolutions (even higher in Liverpool at 40%).

62% of those resolutions include making physical or dietary changes;
- 40% will be to exercise more
- 35% will be to lose weight
- 33% is to improve diet

However, ONLY 8% OF THESE RESOLUTIONS WILL BE SUCCESSFUL. Many people fail in their goals because;

👉 They aren’t breaking down the goal into realistic, manageable, more gradual changes that are sustainable and step them towards their goal (they go “cold turkey” and then can’t sustain it).

👉 They don’t have the support along the way to empathise, educate, and encourage accountability.

For anyone that is kicking off 2024 wanting to make a positive change to their health, we have put together a series of podcasts that bring together all our scientific expertise and customer insights to help anyone on a weight care journey. We have invited a range of leading experts to share the science and debunk the myths and taboos on a range of topics, including weight-stigma, weight care medication, and the impact of mindset and mood.

It has been an absolute privilege to co-host this podcast on behalf of Simple Online Pharmacy alongside the magnificent Sarah Le Brocq Founder of All About Obesity CIC. Whilst we have created these podcasts with our weightcare patients in mind, I didn’t anticipate just how powerful they would be for me personally. They have fundamentally transformed my mindset, helping me easily incorporate new healthy habits which are already making a noticeable difference ❤️

Soon, the end of the market will be reached. One of the few remaining stalls deals not only with confectionery, but also with decorations. Edible decorations, such as candy canes and gingerbread, can be a wonderful, sustainable addition to the festive season. However, there are a few aspects to consider when it comes to your own health:

- Moderation: It's important to enjoy edible decorations in moderation. Many holiday treats are high in sugar and may not have significant nutritional value. Watch your sugar intake, especially if you have dietary restrictions or health concerns.
- Natural ingredients: Opt for edible decorations made from natural ingredients whenever possible. Look for sweets and treats that contain low levels of artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.
- Homemade options: Make your edible decorations at home. This allows you to control ingredients and make healthier choices, such as using whole grains, reducing sugar and avoiding artificial additives.
- Creative alternatives: Explore creative alternatives for edible decorations. For example, use dried fruit, nuts or seeds for decoration, which are not only visually appealing but also have a high nutritional value.
- Portion control: Pay attention to portion size when eating treats. Small, bite-sized edible decorations can be a great way to enjoy the flavours of the season without eating too much.

- Set realistic goals: Manage expectations and set realistic goals. The winter season may bring additional tasks or challenges, so prioritise self-care and adjust your expectations accordingly.
- Embrace seasonal activities: Participate in winter activities that bring you joy, whether it's ice skating, sledding or simply enjoying a cup of hot cocoa by the fireplace.
- Reflect and set resolutions: Take some time to reflect and set resolutions for the winter season. Think about what activities or practices will give you a sense of fulfilment and well-being.
