A very rare Black Moon is coming this month!

On August 22 or 23 – depending on your time zone – the Moon will turn completely dark in the night sky. This isn’t just any New Moon. It’s a seasonal Black Moon, the third New Moon in a season with four – a rare event that happens only once every 33 months.

You won’t be able to see the Moon itself (it will be directly between Earth and the Sun with its unlit side facing us), but that’s what makes this night special: perfectly dark skies for stargazing.

If you’re lucky, you might also catch the last flickers of the Perseid meteor shower, peaking just before the Black Moon.

When it happens:
◾August 22: Western US & Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, parts of Mexico & Pacific islands
◾August 23: Most of the world, including Eastern/Central US, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia & New Zealand

Mark your calendars, find a dark spot away from city lights, and look up – the Black Moon may be invisible, but the stars will never look brighter.
