Derek Wales Fitness and Nutrition

Derek Wales Fitness and Nutrition 1-2-1, Group and Online Personal Training that gets Results! I love helping anyone who wants to make changes to their current situation.

I have a huge passion for helping people to not only reach and exceed their goals, but to see them become both comfortable and knowledgeable within the gym and with their nutrition. I believe that consistency, hard work, structured training and sensible lifestyle choices are what is required in order to achieve long term success with your health and fitness. My approach is a blend between motivation and education. I want to (and I will) push you to work to the level you are capable of. However, I feel equally important is teaching you not only how to eat and train for your situation, but also why you are doing things in a specific way. It is this knowledge that will help and allow you to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle long after you finish doing PT.

I’m not a fan of extremes. For most people, an all or nothing approach just doesn’t work. It may work short term, but for long term lifestyle change, I’ve rarely seen people who adopt this approach last the course. There has to be some sort of balance. Aim for a balanced lifestyle where you regularly eat well, train and move so that you don’t feel any guilt for having some of the stuff you enjoy.

Another cracking Wednesday spent working with the young people in Lourdes Secondary school ✅

As I’m part of Glasgow City Council’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework, primary and secondary schools within the Glasgow area are able to source funding to bring me in to work with a range of pupils on their fitness.

This school have massively bought into this and I now work 2 full days per week working with pupils who are either a bit disengaged with school, pupils with additional support needs or pupils who are in need a bit of extra confidence.

I get amazing job satisfaction in every part of my business, but giving these kids something different to focus on, some new skills/knowledge and giving them a head start in terms of training properly is right up there with the best part of my week 💪

If you are part of a Glasgow based school and think this might be of benefit to the pupils in that school, get in touch and I’ll talk you through what I do 📱

How many times should you train per week as a 30+ year old who is looking to start training to improve strength and fitness for the long term?

My recommendation would be to do 2-3 good quality, full body sessions per week, incorporating mobility, power, strength and conditioning.

2-3 sessions per week will allow you to recover and stay consistent - and it’s my belief that both of these elements are the key to long term success with training.

Something I’m keen to hang onto for as long as possible is an element of athleticism.

Strength work and some conditioning will always be the base, but I love the feeling of being in control of my own body. Being able to challenge it and ‘feel’ athletic, whatever that looks like.

What do I mean by athleticism though? For me, it’d include, among some other things:

Speed - being able to move and react quickly.
Rotations and agility - being able to change direction and twist and turn (without pain).
Balance - not only being able to stand on one leg, but being able to actually move on one leg, land on one leg, etc
Co-ordination - being able to make my arms and legs go where I actually want them to go.

All of the above are obviously great for sports - but also become really important for later in life.

I try to include some form of athleticism in most of my clients training. Sometimes it’s a separate ‘athleticism’ section of a session, other times it’s hidden in the warm up, finishers or within the strength portion of the session.

For me it’s something we should all be including in gym sessions - whether you’re 20 and training for sports or 50 and looking to preserve and improve your physicality for the next 30 or 40 years 👍
