🔍 Code Compliance ≠ Real World Performance

Even fully code compliant HVAC designs can fall short once the building is occupied. In this new Engineered Systems News feature from ACHR News, IES VP Nathan Kegel explores why and what energy modelling teams can do to close the gap.

Real buildings rarely operate under the idealised assumptions used for code compliance. Part load conditions, shifting occupancy, real world weather, control interactions and construction deviations all influence actual system behaviour. If performance is treated as a checklist rather than a continuous evaluation, costly issues often surface only after handover.

Kegel highlights how engineers can design beyond minimum compliance by stress testing systems across realistic scenarios, validating assumptions, and leveraging calibrated digital twins to optimise post occupancy performance.

United Wholesale Scotland transformed energy performance at its Queenslie HQ using IES Live and a calibrated Digital Twin — turning live data into clear Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) for actionable insights.
