In a case study kindly provided by Clinique de Grosbois, a 10 year-old showjumper was examined for acute left hindlimb lameness with effusion of the tarsocrural joint. Radiographs of the left tarsus showed abnormal sclerosis of the central tarsal bone.

Based on the history and clinical signs, fracture of this bone was highly suspected, but not clearly visible on radiographs. Read more over on our clinical cases >> https://okt.to/zhLsYp

Imaging Specialists Alison, Ceri and Maxime are currently in Chamonix at the Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging annual Equine Clinical User Meeting.

Yesterday Maxime was invited to present a talk. The conference focuses on updating vets with the latest advances in equine MRI and CT technologies. It also enables vets to discuss with imaging specialists, such as those attending from Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic, how advanced imaging can be used in real-world settings to greatly enhance clinical diagnosis, which can therefore potentially offer more tailored treatments options.

In early 2022, Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center of Hawaii became home to Hawaii’s first Hallmarq 1.5T small animal MRI. It was a milestone for veterinary imaging in the islands! However, before that, many pets with possible brain, spinal cord, or soft tissue injuries were limited to CT scans. And, although fast, CT is not always able to catch the subtle but critical lesions that MRI can detect. The absence of high‑field MRI was proving to be a barrier to diagnosis and effective treatment.

Bone oedema and sclerosis are two key responses of bone to injury or mechanical overload, but each presents unique challenges for diagnosis and management. Advances in 3D imaging - particularly MRI and CT - have greatly improved our ability to detect subtle bone changes that may not be visible on standard X-rays. Especially important for racehorses - where early identification of bone stress or injury can prevent devastating outcomes - we explore when best to use each modality, and what these findings mean for our equine athletes.

Understanding bone oedema in horses can be challenging, and which modality to us in its diagnosis should be carefully considered.
