Another company fined today for Working at Height failures.

'Our investigation found that the activity that was carried out on the day in question – removing the corrugated sheet tower - wasn’t properly risk assessed,” Sarah said.

'In court, the judge highlighted that the failings, in particular the lack of a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, had led to unsafe working practices being followed. The work simply wasn’t carried out safely; it wasn’t carried out with suitable work at height equipment to prevent a person falling.'

Lack of sufficient risk assessments again.

Legionella risks during the coronavirus pandemic:

The HSE have this week announced the importance of stepping up your water management following recent cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the Midlands where eight cases have been reported, three of which confirmed via lab testing and the people are receiving hospital treatment. This is a powerful reminder that employers, the self-employed and people in control of premises (such as landlords) have a duty to identify and control risks associated with legionella.

Has your company's building been closed or had reduced occupancy during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. If so water system stagnation can occur due to lack of use, increasing the risks of Legionnaires’ disease.

Therefore, the company should review their water management risk assessment and manage the legionella risks when:
• reinstating a water system or start using it again
• restart some types of air conditioning units
If the water system is still used regularly, maintain the appropriate measures to prevent legionella growth.

Read about the outbreaks mentioned above here.

Three people are confirmed to have the disease, while six others are "suspected" cases.

HSE School Spot Checks

Does your school, college etc need assistance with health and safety.
The HSE announced from 7th September that they will be carrying out spot-checks in schools. These spot checks will take the form of an initial phone call to review the measures taken for reopening to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

The HSE are looking for schools to demonstrate their knowledge and awareness of the relevant government guidance. If they are not satisfied with the information provided, this will be followed by a visit.

We are aware of some schools that have already been contacted.

If you need some advice or support then please don't hesitate to contact us.
