Gould Singleton Architects have been appointed to prepare pre-application planning submission for the redevelopment and renovation of the Smethwick Swimming Baths for community primary healthcare use.

Iconic Art Deco Grade II listed swimming baths in Thimblemill Road, Bearwood, the site which opened in 1933, previously housed 2 swimming pools, and a stage used by the Beatles and pop groups over the years.

Initial designs incorporate GP surgeries and consulting rooms, treatment rooms and a pharmacy. Additional healthcare facilities will be incorporated whilst retaining the heritage and historic features of the listed building.

Planning permission has now been secured for 26 residential properties alongside 56 sheltered retirement dwellings within Bourton-on-the-Water

The proposed scheme for the demolition of existing buildings and hardstanding, and phased redevelopment to provide residential dwellings, retirement housing and shared access drive, offers an opportunity for the significant enhancement of an underutilised vacant commercial site in the heart of a residential area, with improved biodiversity with soft landscaping, amenity space and appropriate residential use.

The design builds on the principles established through the initial pre-application submissions and design development through to the detailed submission with the sheltered retirement accommodation located on the eastern half of the site separated by a central spine road, with a landscaped tree lined avenue and housing to the western half of the site remains.

The views and appearance on entry to the site from Station Road give a glimpse of the entrance to the sheltered retirement development with projecting gables, windows and balcony features leading the viewer into the site along the tree lined access road through to the main entrance, and central courtyard to the sheltered retirement building.

The overarching identity of the development site is entirely residential reflecting a site wide wholistic design approach in the traditional Cotswold style of the housing and the sheltered retirement development

PRESS RELEASE:

Gould Singleton Architects receives strategic investment from leading Scottish practice Bracewell with synergies & increased scale set to see group target larger projects UK-wide

Highlights:

* Investment creates a 50 strong team of architects, technologists & support staff

* Increased scale of group will see it bid for larger projects, UK-wide

* Well-established Gould Singleton brand to be retained

* All staff and directors retained

Midlands-based Gould Singleton Architects has received a strategic investment from Bracewell, one of Scotland’s longest established architectural practices. Joining Bracewell as part of the consultancy portfolio of Scottish investment group, Global, the newly combined architecture group - with 50 architects, technologists & support staff - will work together, benefitting from synergies and opportunities across the wider group, to bid for large scale commercial and residential projects UK-wide.

Following the investment, which directors at both companies are hailing as a ‘meeting of minds’ and ‘a perfect alignment of capabilities and reach’, all staff and management will be retained and continue to operate under the well established and widely respected Gould Singleton Architects and Bracewell brands.

Gould Singleton Architects, enjoys a rich history dating back to 1977 and is recognised for its Project management skills, innovative design and technical expertise particularly in light gauge steel frame LGSF construction. A meeting of minds :

Speaking about joining forces with Bracewell, Gould Singleton Director, Stephen Cox, said:

“We are excited to take this next step in our growth journey alongside what is one of Scotland’s most respected consultancies. Having previously worked closely with other companies in the Global portfolio, we are excited to join together with David Keith, Amanda MacRitchie and their team to explore new markets and deliver bigger projects together.

"This really is a meeting of minds and a great fit, with the combining of our resources, capabilities and geographical reach allowing us to work with existing and new clients to deliver major commercial and residential projects right across the UK.

“With Global’s reputation for developing talent and future leaders, the whole team at Gould Singleton are excited for the opportunities that this new partnership will bring, both individually and as a company.”

Bracewell growth journey continues :

Commenting on the strategic investment - Bracewell’s first since becoming part of leading Scottish investment group, Global, in 2024 - Senior Partner, David Keith, said:

“As long term admirers of Gould Singleton Architects - and Stephen Cox and fellow Director, Peter Icke - myself and fellow Bracewell Senior partner, Amanda MacRitchie, are thrilled to bring together these two long-established practices. While we will both continue to operate individually under our strong and recognised brands, servicing clients in our key markets, the scaling up of our resources this investment brings will allow the enlarged entity to work closely together to grow and explore bigger opportunities, which is really exciting for us all.

“Since joining the Global portfolio, we have seen first hand the power of being supported by - and benefitting from the synergies and opportunities that come with being part of - a larger group. I know Stephen, Peter, Amanda and I - are all excited to see where we can go together on this next step of our growth journey.”

Since joining the Global group of companies in 2024, Bracewell has increased the size of its team by 50%, expanded its services and entered new markets. As well as providing architectural and design services, the company has been providing Energy & Sustainability compliance advice, including Passivhaus. In addition to expanding its energy performance capabilities, it has also grown its masterplanning design service by engaging new staff with specific skills in this area while also expanding its commercial architecture offering.

Group growth :

Commenting on the investment, Rory Mackenzie, Board Director at Bracewell parent company, Global, said:

“This strategic investment sees Gould Singleton Architects join Bracewell in what is a growing Global consultancy portfolio numbering in excess of 400 hundred consultants, designers and specialists. We look forward to the new synergies and opportunities that will be created by having an innovative and commercially astute practice like Gould Singleton in the group.

“Having worked closely with GSA through other companies in the portfolio we know they have similar values to our own - prioritising people, innovation and quality - and we look forward to supporting their team on this next stage of their growth journey both as individuals and as a company.”

We’re proud to be entering the next phase of work as their Architects — a relationship that now spans over 25 years. Over that time, we've worked together on everything from small-scale improvements to major new facilities in Bicton and Apley (Telford).
It’s been especially rewarding to revisit the Community Services Building — a space primarily designed for the community — and see the surrounding gardens maturing beautifully. These spaces are not just buildings; they’re part of the care environment that supports patients, families, and the hospice team.
Our latest scheme is a further extension to provide enhanced patient care accommodation, currently under construction by E Manton Ltd of Birmingham, with completion expected later this year.
Yesterday’s work included a full drone survey of the remaining roof areas as we begin detailing for replacement and recovery — the next chapter in this long-term collaboration.

🚧 We’re just under halfway through the construction of a brand-new warehouse for Hayley Group HQ in Halesowen, with A&H Construction & Developments Plc.
🏗️ The development includes:
- New 40,500 sqft warehouse bring total for the site to c130,000sqft
- 25,000 sqft of modern office space spread across three floors
- An additional 30,000 sqft of warehouse mezzanine arranged over two storeys
☀️ The roof is set to be completed within the next two weeks, after which approximately 450 photovoltaic panels will be installed. These panels will generate around 240KWp of solar energy, facing directly south—resulting in an estimated annual saving of 90,000kg in CO₂ emissions. With still plenty of space for expansion.

🏡 One of our long-standing specialisms is the design and delivery of bespoke private residential dwellings tailored to our clients’ visions.
📍 We successfully secured planning consent for a new home located within a Conservation Area, adjacent to a Grade I listed park and garden—also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This marks the fifth dwelling we’ve gained approval for in proximity to this remarkable 18th-century parkland in the Black Country, Dudley.
🔄 Following initial approval, we returned to planning to revise the garage design, making more effective use of the site’s natural topography. The dwelling has also been enhanced to incorporate the roof space, further maximizing its potential.
📐 Now commissioned to complete the detailed design package ahead of works commencing on site
