Want to help improve outcomes for new mums? OoberMama by ooberfit is campaigning for physical abs checks to be a prescriptive part of all postnatal checks.

If a mum is aware they have a Diastasis Recti, they can take extra care and seek help in closing the separation. But, being ignorant of the problem can lead to greater issues, including back pain, leaking or incontinence and prolapses.

Did you know that GPs and midwives are still not shown how to do this simple check during training and so most mums will have no idea they have a problem until it gets worse?

Join me in my campaign by filling in this short online questionnaire. So far almost 500 respondents have highlighted the shortcomings in postnatal care, with over 70% of respondents suffering some kind of bladder leaking. We need to get this check on the table and close this huge gap in postnatal services (quite literally!) Please share the survey with your mummy friends across the country if they’ve had a baby within the last 15 years. Thank you!

I am appealing for your help please!

My campaign calling nationally for abdominal separation (Diastasis Recti) examinations to be a prescriptive part of postnatal checks is gaining momentum. Earlier this year, I launched a survey looking at postnatal aftercare, in particular the 6-8 week postnatal check.

Astonishingly, physical Diastasis Recti (DR) checks are not part of GP/midwifery training. A mum who does not know her abs have separated cannot protect themselves from greater damage, particularly if they go back to normal exercise.

There is also little in place to help rectify the problem when identified, which I suspect is part of the reason it is largely ignored by NICE, the body setting our healthcare standards.

I offer free webinars to GPs and midwives demonstrating how to do this simple non-invasive check and unwrap a low pressure fitness routine that safely closes any gap. Undetected separations can lead to far greater complications such as urinary leaking, incontinence and prolapses, costing the NHS far more in cash and manhours to put right.

Armed with my survey results - currently 500 respondents, most of whom, unsurprisingly, conclusively give weight to my arguments - I can approach the Health Department, NICE and the BMA, but ideally I’d like a larger, more ethnically diverse and wider spread response.

Please, please share my questionnaire below with any mum you know who has had a baby in the past 10-15 years. Since COVID the follow up process for postnatal mums has taken a huge step backwards and this also needs resetting.

Help me be this voice of change for every new mum. Let’s face it, they “literally make all the people!”

I recently saw a reel where a man asked a young woman who were better, men or women. “Women of course,” she replied. He proceeded to ask who walked on the moon first, who is the richest person in the world, who invented the light bulb? “Oh yeah,” she conceded, momentarily silenced. And then she seemed to have her own light bulb moment and replied: “But who gave birth to them all?” We literally make all the people, so surely women should have the standard of healthcare that recognises this. Being the birth giver is a wonderful thing in so many ways, but the toll it can take on our bodies is tough on many women, not just post-birth but longterm. Recognising this and ensuring correct provision is key. For Crying Out Loud! Campaigning to close the gap in postnatal careUK.
