With Somatic Therapy being a huge part of the new Self Enquiry sessions at Akira Wellbeing, I thought I’d start sharing some info as to what it really is. For those of you who have worked with me in the past in more of an intuitive & energetic coaching format, this won’t be anything new to you. But if you’ve been coming in for traditional sports massage and injury rehab, this will be quite a change 💙
What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to healing that works directly with the nervous system, aiming to increase your capacity to feel, move, and respond to life with more ease.
Many of us carry unresolved stress, trauma, and emotional patterns in our bodies. These patterns unconsciously shape so much of our lives, from how we move and breathe, to how we relate to others — and how safe we feel in the world. Over time, they can manifest as chronic tension, pain, autoimmune disorders and other forms of disease.
Through hands-on work, intentional physical exercises, and guided awareness, somatic therapy helps the body gradually acclimate to positions, movements and sensations that may currently feel overwhelming — often because they’re linked to held trauma or unconscious emotional responses. During this process, these unfelt and unresolved emotions often arise, and together we create space for them to be felt and expressed fully.
This gradual exposure builds nervous system capacity and internal resilience, allowing for deeper emotional and physical integration. This increased capacity to sit with one’s feelings and experience, allows it to be met with presence, understanding and clarity, so that you can begin to move forward in ways that create the life you want.
By listening to the body in this way, we begin to uncover the unconscious beliefs and narratives that may be silently influencing how we feel, behave, and function.
This isn’t just about relieving symptoms - it’s about changing the internal conditions that created them and the story we’re telling about ourselves moment to moment.
If you’re ready to explore what your body might be trying to say, I’d love to work with you over at our new home in 📍💆
