Conquest Maternity

Conquest Maternity Our midwives provide midwife-led and consultant led care at the Conquest Hospital consultant led maternity unit where we also have neonatal services.

Our Maternity departments serve the population of East Sussex where we care for around 3,300 pregnant people and their babies each year, during pregnancy, labour, birth and up until one month after birth. We have a midwife-led birthing unit in Eastbourne Hospital. A home birth service is also available dependent upon an individual assessment. Your experience of pregnancy and birth really matters to us and we will do all we can to provide the best possible care for you, your partner and your baby, within the hospital, community and home settings. We are committed to personalised care and will try to meet your wishes so far as it is safely possible. Our Facebook group is a great platform for us to communicate with you, you to communicate with each other and for us to get your fantastic ideas, photos, experiences and views. What is it for? ~

Many new parents are told to expect the baby blues - tearful moments. mood swings, feeling overwhelmed.
For many, this passes within a couple of weeks but for others, what they’re experiencing is something more.

Baby blues often:
- Start in the first few days after birth
- Feel up and down, but manageable
- Ease within around two weeks

Something more may:
- Last longer or feel like it’s getting harder
- Include constant anxiety, panic or low mood
- Make it difficult to sleep, eat or enjoy anything
- Bring intrusive or frightening thoughts
- Feel isolating, even when support is around

Here’s the most important part - if it’s affecting you, it matters! You don’t need a diagnosis. You don’t need to be “worse” and you don’t need to wait until you’re at breaking point.

If you’re unsure what you’re feeling, or worried it isn’t going away, you deserve support.

If you need help monitoring how you're feeling you can use our mood tracker. Simply visit the relevant link in the comment below.

In light of extreme and sustained operational pressures both in our emergency departments and across the wards, we have declared a business continuity incident at Eastbourne DGH to ensure the safety and continuity of our services.

Please support us by only attending our emergency departments for serious or life-threatening emergencies. Please share our posts on social media to help us let as many people know as possible that they should consider other health services, such as your GP, pharmacies or NHS 111. This helps ensure that our hospitals can care for those who need them most.

MMRV is now part of the NHS routine childhood vaccination programme, replacing the MMR vaccine.
It protects against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.

Chickenpox is very common and can sometimes lead to serious complications, so vaccination helps reduce the risk of serious illness as children grow.

You don’t need to do anything — your GP will be in touch when your child is due.

Do you know about Martha’s rule? This gives some very useful information which we support at ESHT about asking for a second medical opinion.

Did you watch last night’s The One Show powerful film about Martha’s Rule?

Martha’s Rule is a support line that is putting patients and their families at the heart of hospital care. It allows patients, families, carers and staff to call a number on the ward to request a rapid review if a patient’s condition is getting worse.

Dr Ronny Cheung, a consultant general paediatrician at Evelina London Children's Hospital, spoke to reporter Ashley John-Baptiste in the film about what it can mean for clinicians.

Dr Cheung said: “If even one of those calls ends up changing the course of a patient’s care for the better and potentially saving lives, it’s unconscionable for us not to do that.”

There’s still time to watch The One Show film on BBC iPlayer.
