💛 This beautiful crystalline mineral is on display at the in London.
And I've no idea how to even begin to do it justice, as it is such a fundamental remedy in homeopathy - it stands as one of the big constitutionals, is multi-miasmatic and has such a huge personality, that this post may need to come with a warning label: Bring supplies, settle in, your appearance may resemble that of a nomad and your thoughts may have elevated to the clouds by the time you've gotten around to moving from your position 🌬
Sulphur is primarily sourced around volcanoes and hot springs 🌋 it is "omnipresent, multi-form, super-reactive, and versitile" (Vermeulen). Of all elements, it has the most allotropic forms (meaning it can occur as all three states of aggregation - gas, liquid, solid) and is found in all living organisms, making Sulphur a vital component in some proteins, vitamins, and hormones.
Sulphur cycles between the atmosphere, lithosphere (earth's crust), and hydrosphere (oceans and water masses). The 'rotten egg' odour comes from the release of hydrogen sulphide gas, created by the anaerobic respiratory processing of sulphate-reducing bacteria. It reacts with all metals, except gold and platinum, to form inorganic sulphides, and is an extremely active element on the whole. The paradox of Sulphur is that, by it's very nature, it should actually be thought of a 'solid gas'. It is polaric and can combine with almost anything, including itself; it likes to saturate the polarities within itself in order to combine with itself. 🤯 There surely can not be a more self-indulgent, egotistical substance!
Sulphur is an integral component of matches, medicinal purposes, fireworks, black gunpowder, as a fungicide/insecticide, vulcanisation of natural rubber, and treatment of certain skin disorders. Interestingly, Sulphur occurs not just in all proteins in the body, but also makes up part of the blood clotting agent Heparin; assists insulin in the metabolism of carbohydrates; and body reserves of Sulphur reside in keratin - hence the awful 'burnt hair' smell. The Sulphur content also dictates the curliness of an individuals hair! Sheep's wool can contain 5% of its weight in Sulphur and lanolin (sheep's wool fat) is rich in Sulphur - which may be an interesting connection between a Sulphur patients dislike of wool clothing on their skin, as much as their tendency to producing allergic skin reactions.
A most common adverse effect of sulphiting agents in food, is that of bronchoconstriction similar to asthmatic effects. This may be accompanied by intense skin itching, anaphylaxis, digestive upset, hypotension and angiodema - all symptoms that are characteristic of, and can be treated by, the homeopathic remedy Sulphur.
🟡 Sulphur has an affinity to the circulatory system, the skin (especially folds and creases), the vertex, soles of feet, nutrition organs (esp. digestive system), all membranes, and owns primarily left sided afflictions.
Sulphurous induviduals can be philosophical, dreamers, theorising; and they can be practical, mechanical, idealistic. However, the egocentricity dis-order within a Sulphur often means that it is too much trouble to make their many ideas become a reality. Genius ideas tend to stay just that, despite the depth and intricacy of knowledge that they hold, the inclination to put things in motion is often not there. The unquenchable thirst for knowledge is coupled with a prodigious memory, which can be brought out and displayed with confidence as though dictated straight out of a text book.
Their vanity and self-assuredness can sometimes provide a veil for their actual lack of self-confidence. Cognitive dissonance is rife and they would rather defend an inaccurate belief they have, than admit they had been incorrect. This stems from a fear of embarrassment and they will go to great lengths of boasting, exaggerating, and debating for the sake of forcing the spot light, controling what is front and centre, in order to steer others far away from their insecurities.
Sulphurs are like radiators, they have their own heating system and it's on constant! They can be sensitive to drafts, yet prefer being in fresh open air. All secretions (sweat, urine, stools, etc) smell highly offensive and they burn when they come into contact with the skin. And this is the same for pains and localised flushes of heat, experienced as burning sensations. Because of this, they have an intolerance of and feel worse for warm applications, close rooms, the heat of a bed, etc.
They experience a great weakness with hunger and a big energy dip around 11:00, usually resulting in snacking behaviours close to meal times. Sulphurs usually reach for sweets and spicy foods to get the energy pip they crave. They also tend to have a night time aggravation, waking in the night around 4-5am.
In the world of homeopathy, Sulphur is fondly known as the 'ragged philosopher'; head in the clouds, with schemes that could change the world, either completely unkempt and not a care for it, or beautifully presented in their appearance but with a small detail left out of place - a loose button, an ill fitting shirt, a hole in their socks, dirt under their chipped but otherwise manicured nails.
Sulphur is also an eliminator and a cleanser. It has the ability to de-toxify the body after overloading on too much of something, whether that's pharmaceuticals, drugs, alcohol, or other substances. It drives a person from their bed to evacuate their bowels, whereby stools are often very loose and urgent. Skin breaks out in festering cracks that don't heal well, voluptuous itching, and an unhealthy appearance.
Sulphur individuals are also collectors. And when this is seen in the context of Sulphur being a key Base Chakra remedy, it makes a lot of sense. When we don't feel safe, we may feel both physically and mentally un-grounded. We therefore make attempts to fabricate security from external sources, thus forming a false sense of safety. Some of the other behavioural approaches of Sulphur act as shielding, from others seeing their weaknesses. By utilising Base related remedies, reuniting the physical and etheric parts of the Self can take place.
🟡📸 Despite this being a much longer post than most of my others, as always, this is but a snapshot of the remedy picture of Sulphur, and you don't have to have everything listed for it to still be a very beneficial remedy for you - it just has to be the most similar remedy that matches with your symptoms ☯️
