Manchester Wilderness Medicine Society (MWMS) was refounded in 2009 by a group of medical students at Manchester Medical School. Over the past few years, the society has only become stronger, establishing itself as one of the most active student societies in the medical school. MWMS makes a concerted effort to be the 'practical society', giving attendees at its lectures and training sessions real skills which they could apply themselves if the need arose. This covers things like the use of items of equipment, to practising carrying an injured casualty. We also hold several lectures each year, usually based around areas which it is hard to give hands-on experience in. MWMS events are open to any student at Manchester University with an interest in the event subject (though a level of healthcare knowledge may be presumed). MWMS is not a profit making organisation. Any monies raised are used to purchase new equipment to increase the training opportunities we can offer. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Want to represent Manchester at Wild Trials 2026? We are looking for a team of 1 pre-clinical and 3 clinical students to compete in a weekend of fun scenarios at Dartmoor Activity Centre on 1st-3rd May 2026. It is a great opportunity to practice and meet students from other medical schools! We require applicants to be able to attend both Wild Trials and our teaching day (12th April 2026 all day in Manchester) to be considered. Due to the small number of places, the more involvement with the society the better! Please reach out if you’re interested in being involved in the weekend in other ways eg. Sim patient too! Exciting news!!! MWMS are running our first ever senior trip 24-26th April and we need you.

Tickets on sale 23/3 7pm!

Juniors: open to anyone who wants to be a fabulous patient or an awesome examiner. This is an opportunity to really get some experience teaching and get back at committee for that scenario (you know the one we mean).

Seniors: 4 & 5th years and committee, this is your chance to do the kinds of more advanced scenarios we don't normally run on our trips.

The details: 24-26th April Blakedean Scout Hostel. £25 for food and accommodation, no transport provided but we can pick you up from the station.

🌟 Northern Trials 2026! 🌟
Last weekend, two teams from Manchester headed to Hebden Bridge for this year’s Northern Trials, kindly hosted by Leeds!
We had the best time re-living our Deadly 60 dreams and tackling a whole range of wilderness med scenarios (from asthma attacks to complex traumas) putting our skills (and teamwork!) to the test.
And of course… no wilderness weekend would be complete without a wilderness Bake Off 🍰🔥
Huge congratulations to Leeds for taking the win - you guys are the GOATs! 🐐
Thank you again to for organising such an incredible weekend. We had the best time and can’t wait to see everyone again next year! ⛰️💖

Want to do some actual medicine? Get some more experience in sim? Come on the MWMS spring trip!

Cost? £60 - coach from Manchester on friday night plus all your food, accom and activites for the weekend included (a bargain really)

All knowledge levels accepted - clinical years this is a great opportunity to start being able to teach younger years in your group!

So what do we do? Well, on friday night we will have a bus pick up everyone from fallowfield campus and take us to YHA Ravenstore (near Buxton). We have rented the whole place so on saturday, teams split across year groups will compete in heros and villains themed A-E scenarios run by committee accross the grounds wich is a really great way to practice while keeping it fun. In the evening we will have some fun and then a bit of a party happens. Fancy dress is encouraged! If thats not your thing there will be space with limited alcohol and noise! Then on Sunday we will do a short simulated mass casuelty excersise and go on a hike with picnick lunch. Then we all come back to Manchester by tea time!

All years + non medics are welcome. There will be an evening of informal pre trip training for anyone that wants to have a bit extra knowledge to feel extra prepared for the scnearios and be familiar with the kit we have access to.

If you are fasting for ramadan we have sorted a plan and will email you specifics of what food and when before hand so if there is anything else we can do it will be accomodated.
