VP. Verrucae. Foot gremlins.
Small, persistent, mildly eldritch horrors caused by human papillomavirus. They enter through microscopic trauma in the epidermis, sit comfortably in keratinised tissue and largely evade immune recognition. No dramatic infection. Just a quiet occupation.
They are hardy. HPV can persist within the stratum spinosum and granulosum, protected by thickened skin. Burned, frozen, sliced, smothered. Sometimes they recur as if nothing happened. The plantar surface becomes a low-grade battleground.
Occasionally they resolve spontaneously when the immune system finally mounts a response. For others, they linger. Painful under load. Structurally disruptive. Socially inconvenient.
Over-the-counter treatments have variable success. Salicylic acid works if used properly and persistently. Many people stop too soon. If you are currently sealed in duct tape and hope, you are not alone.
At Valley Road Podiatry, management is targeted and evidence-based.
Assessment to confirm true VP versus callus or other lesion.
Debridement to reduce viral load and improve treatment pe*******on.
Verutop application in suitable cases.
Controlled caustic chemocautery where indicated.
Dry needling to stimulate a localised immune response in persistent lesions.
Structured follow-up rather than reactive treatment.
Treatment for VP, including acute intervention and a follow-up appointment, inclusive of initial assessment, is £32.
