Ways to regulate using neuropsychology

4. Managing Sadness

This is a different one for all of us. As humans we are pleasure seekers and we hate anything that makes us feel sad or upset. We try everything to suppress, deny and bury feelings of sadness under a multitude of distractions.

Sit with your feeling, experience the sadness, acknowledge why you are sad. Feel the feeling and then move through it. This is a much shorter process than ignoring its there. Sometimes we just need to feel.

Then move! Get up, move around, this releases endorphins… dance like no one is watching if you like… shake out your arms and legs and release all that tention

3. Feeling low / insecure

Sometimes it’s hard to see the wood for the trees especially when we are feeling low. Take a deep breath and list your strengths. If this is to difficult then just list some facts about yourself first before you list the good stuff. Thinking logically overrides the limbic system which is the part of the brain responsible for feelings and emotions. Logic and reason is a powerful tool.

2. Managing anxiety

Movement and motion
Many studies have shown that walking, movement and exercise reduce activity in the amygdala. This is why we often feel more relaxed after a lovely walk, swim or yoga session

Ways to regulate using neuropsychology

1. Managing stress

The physiological sigh
Developed by A. Huberman et al. It consists of 2 of quick inhalations through the nose followed by one slow exhale through the mouth. Repeat a few times or until you begin to feel calmer.

This increases CO2 in your lungs and and helps to regain the balance of your autonomic nervous system 😌🌬️

Context and meaning

If you are able to unpick or break down a presenting behaviour and find the context, it will change what it means to you.
