🌍 World Health Day – The 5 Pillars of Health

Health isn’t built from one single action — it’s the result of multiple systems working together.

Today is a reminder to focus on the key foundations that support how your body functions:

🥦 Nutrition – Fuel your body with the nutrients it needs
😴 Rest – Allow your body time to recover and repair
🧘‍♂️ Mindfulness – Manage stress and support mental wellbeing
🏃‍♂️ Exercise – Keep your body strong, mobile and active
🧠 Nervous System Function – The system which coordinates everything

The nervous system plays a central role in how your body adapts, heals and functions. The spine helps protect this system, which is why spinal health is an important part of overall wellbeing.

Chiropractic care focuses on assessing spinal movement and function, supporting how the body communicates and performs.

Small daily habits across these 5 pillars can make a meaningful difference over time.

💙 Building a healthy body and mind, one step at a time.

😄 April Fools… or is it?

“Your spine only matters when you’re in pain.”

…April Fools 😉

The reality is:

Your spine plays a role in movement, posture and how your body functions every day — not just when symptoms appear.

Health is often built through consistent habits, not just reacting when something feels wrong.

✔ Moving regularly
✔ Looking after your posture
✔ Staying active
✔ Supporting spinal health

Because feeling fine doesn’t always mean everything is functioning at its best.

💙 A little awareness today can make a big difference long-term.

Have a fun and healthy April Fools Day from Andrea Chiropractic & Wellness!

💪 What Are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are tight, sensitive spots within muscles that can cause discomfort both locally and in other areas of the body.

They are often felt as small, tender nodules within a tight band of muscle fibres

🔎 Why Do They Occur?

Trigger points may develop due to:

• Muscle strain or injury
• Repetitive use or overuse
• Poor posture
• Ongoing physical or emotional stress
• Changes in spinal movement and function

Over time, reduced blood flow in these areas can lead to a build-up of metabolic waste products, which may contribute to discomfort

⚠️ What Do They Feel Like?

Trigger points can:

• Feel tender or tight
• Cause stiffness or reduced movement
• Refer discomfort to other areas (e.g. neck → head or shoulder)

✔️ What Can Help?

Management may include:

• Stretching to improve muscle flexibility
• Heat to support blood flow
• Manual therapy (e.g. trigger point therapy or massage)
• Movement and posture improvements
• Chiropractic care to support spinal movement and soft tissue function

Understanding trigger points can help explain why discomfort doesn’t always stay in one place — and why addressing movement and muscle function is important.

If you’re experiencing ongoing muscle tension or recurring discomfort, an assessment can help identify contributing factors.

🧠 Chiropractic Care & the Brain

The spine and brain are closely connected.

The spine protects the spinal cord, which forms part of the central nervous system — responsible for coordinating movement, processing information and helping the body respond to its environment.

🔗 Why This Connection Matters

The brain relies on accurate information from the body to:

• Coordinate movement
• Maintain balance and posture
• Regulate muscle activity
• Adapt to physical stress

This information is constantly sent from joints, muscles and tissues to the brain.

🧠 Where Chiropractic Fits In

Chiropractic care focuses on assessing spinal movement and function.

Some research, including work by Heidi Haavik, has explored how changes in spinal function may influence the way the brain processes sensory and movement-related information (sensorimotor integration).

Improving joint movement may help support more normal input from the body to the brain.

✔️ The Aim

The aim of care is to support how the body moves and functions — not just how it feels.

Because how your body functions can influence how you perform daily activities, from work to exercise and beyond.

If you have concerns about your spine or posture, a consultation can help assess how your body is moving and functioning.

🪑 Kneeling Chairs – Are They Better for Your Posture?

If you spend long hours sitting, your chair can make a big difference to how your spine feels and functions.

Kneeling chairs are becoming more popular — but what do they actually do?

🔎 How Kneeling Chairs Work

Kneeling chairs position your body with:

• Hips slightly more open (around 100–110°)
• Weight distributed between your seat and shins
• A more upright trunk position

This can encourage a more neutral spinal posture compared to slouching in a traditional chair.

✔️ Potential Benefits

🧍 Encourages upright posture
May help reduce forward head posture and rounding of the shoulders.

🦴 Reduces lower back strain (for some people)
By tilting the pelvis forward, it may support a more natural lumbar curve.

💪 Promotes muscle engagement
Requires more active postural control rather than fully relying on back support.

🔄 Breaks prolonged sitting patterns
Changing positions can reduce repetitive strain on the same structures.

⚠️ Important Considerations

• Not suitable for long continuous use for everyone
• Can place pressure on knees and shins
• Still requires regular movement and breaks
• Posture is influenced by habits — not just the chair

🧠 The Bigger Picture

No chair is a perfect solution.

Your spine thrives on movement, variation and regular breaks — not staying in one position all day.

Chiropractic care focuses on spinal movement and function, alongside advice on posture, ergonomics and daily habits.

If you’re unsure whether your desk set-up is supporting your body, a posture and spinal assessment can help identify what’s working — and what’s not.

Wishing everyone a nice weekend. Enjoy some much needed Vitamin D (sunlight)!

19/03/2026

☀️ The Benefits of Sunlight for Your Health

Sunlight is one of the simplest — and often overlooked — ways to support your overall wellbeing.

Spending time outdoors can have a positive effect on both your body and mind.

🌿 Why Sunlight Matters

☀️ Vitamin D production
Supports bone health, muscle function and the immune system.

🧠 Mood & mental wellbeing
Sunlight helps regulate serotonin, which plays a role in mood and energy levels.

😴 Sleep quality
Exposure to natural light helps regulate your circadian rhythm, improving sleep patterns.

💪 Movement & activity
Being outdoors often encourages more walking, exercise and general movement.

🧠 The Nervous System Connection

Your body relies on environmental input — including light — to regulate many internal processes.

Regular exposure to natural light can support how your body adapts, recovers and functions.

The spine protects the nervous system, which coordinates these processes, including sleep cycles, muscle function and overall regulation.

✔️ Simple Tips

🌤 Get outside for 10–20 minutes daily (when possible)
🚶‍♂️ Combine sunlight with movement (walks are ideal)
🕶 Avoid prolonged direct exposure without protection
🌅 Morning light can be especially beneficial for your sleep cycle

Small daily habits — like getting outside — can have a meaningful impact on your health over time.

Take advantage of the sunshine when you can.

🧠🌿 Gut Health & Brain Health – The Vagus Nerve Connection

Your gut and brain are constantly communicating.

This connection — often called the gut–brain axis — plays an important role in how you feel, think and function.

One of the key pathways involved is the vagus nerve, a major nerve that links the brain to the digestive system.

🔗 Why This Matters

The vagus nerve helps regulate:

• Digestion
• Inflammation
• Heart rate
• Stress responses
• Mood and emotional regulation

A large amount of communication actually travels from the gut to the brain, not just the other way around.

🌱 Gut Health Influences Brain Function

Your gut microbiome (the bacteria in your digestive system) can influence:

• Neurotransmitter production (e.g. serotonin)
• Immune system activity
• Inflammatory responses
• Stress resilience

This is why changes in gut health may be linked with changes in mood, energy and overall wellbeing.

🧠 Where Chiropractic Fits In

The spine protects the nervous system, including pathways that influence the vagus nerve and brain–body communication.

Chiropractic care focuses on spinal movement and function, with the aim of supporting how the nervous system communicates and adapts.

Research in chiropractic neuroscience, including work by Heidi Haavik, has explored how spinal function may influence brain processing and sensorimotor integration.

✔️ Simple Ways to Support the Gut–Brain Axis

🥦 Eat a diverse, whole-food diet
💧 Stay well hydrated
😴 Prioritise sleep
🚶‍♂️ Move regularly
🧘‍♂️ Manage stress

Looking after your gut, spine and nervous system together can help support overall health and function.

Because your body works as one connected system — not separate parts.
