Perimenopause and Menopause can significantly affect gut health, leading to constipation, bloating, weight gain, reflux.
So what ate some of the causes:

🩺There are oestrogen and progesterone receptors in the gut. Lack of these hormones can lead to smooth muscle relaxation, gut stasis and sluggish bowel. This in turn leads to bowels not emptying well.

🩺Lack of oestrogen can decrease muscle mass which helps burn calories. This in turn can cause weight gain. In addition, other symptoms caused by lack of oestrogen such as low energy, mood changes, achy bones and joints can lead us to become more sedentary, which reduces gut motility.

🩺Lack of oestrogen can cause increase in cortisol levels. This can disrupt gut microbiomes and cause bloating and digestion issues. In addition, high cortisol levels further reduces progesterone which then leads to smooth muscle relaxation, (and gut stasis and sluggish bowels as above).

🩺Thyroid imbalance can play a part in gut issues. For example low thyroid can reduce nutrient absorption and slow digestion.

🩺Our gut and mood are very much interlinked. If we suffer frommenopause symptoms such as anxiety and low mood, this can impact our bowels

These symptoms are commonly suffered. For support with your symptoms why not seek specialist support.

*January blues*
With the weather particularly cold and dark, we all feel the 'January blues'. When you are already faced with symptoms resulting from hormone changes such as fatigue, joint & muscle aches, low mood, poor concentration, anxiety, gut issues to name a few, these can worsen during the cold months.

Don't wait until your symptoms get really bad, seek help and get the right treatment you need.
Some other tips you might find helpful:
🦴Take daily Vitamin D 1000 IU and Calcium 1000mg
💃 Regular exercise, in particular outdoors, can help boost mood, and help improve sleep, muscle/joint aches and improve gut motility
🧘‍♀️ Take time to do relaxation techniques or meditation. This can help mood, muscle and sleep symptoms
🧄🐟🧀🥑🥛 Try to eat little and often rather than large meals, following a Mediterranean diet.
☀️ Get as much sunlight as possible. Some women find it helpful to buy a light source to mimic natural light
☕🍷 Reducing alcohol amd caffeine can help improve sleep, mood and flushes
🍬🍰 Try and have sugary foods and drinks in moderation. Carbohydrates and sugary foods can leave us feeling sluggish, and worsen physical symptoms such as headaches, low mood, poor sleep, bladder discomfort.

🎄🎅My little son wanted this advent truck for Christmas, 'Full of treats' he requested 😁

🥰I've been doing a lot reflecting this year.
It can be tough balancing a full time career with having a small child and family life.
I love my husband and son so much but often feel guilt for working so hard.
I keep telling myself how passionate I am about all the women's health education I provide, and I know I'm helping so many women....

❤❤So....I had an idea. Rather than fill his advert with scoffable chocolates and plastic tat, why not turn this into a family bonding activity.

🗓So this year, for every advent day, we have been writing down a few words of something that we are grateful for or makes us happy or we are proud of. The post-it note goes into each little truck window and next year we will spend the day together opening all the doors and reading the notes out.

I'm so excited to do this and look back on how much I love my family and how lucky I am

Happy Christmas everyone ❤
