Spotting pneumonia in puppies , little brown was five days old when I spotted he wasn’t right. He was getting knocked when on the teats so he was taking in air. Straight to the vets for 5 days worth of antibiotics, keep him warm and latch him on separate to the rest of the litter .. this is little ( not so little now ) George. Spotting early signs is vital.

Let’s talk equipment . Whelping box , this is a must for your litter, inside you can see something called pig rails. They are put in so if mum lays down the pups won’t be squashed or suffocated , they roll under the rails to stop this. You will also need a heat mat , the puppies body temperature needs to be 29-30 deg then drops to 29-29 deg 10 days onwards. A slider door , this stops the pups escaping once active but when the slider is removed it allows them in and out of the whelping box along with mum. Vet bedding - amazing stuff. Do not use duvets as pups can easily be buried in them and suffocate and mums tend to dig more With duvets.
