Herbs and spices not only taste fantastic, they each have their own healing properties. In today's society, we reach for manufactured medicines at the mere sign of a cough or ailment, but do they have to be the only approach to healing?
Sometimes turning to just medical science is not enough. Besides being costly, some treatments can be long, stressful, and cause more issues.
Herbal remedies have the ability to heal and boost physical and mental well-being, and have gained popularity over the past decade with many people trusting herbs and their magical properties over more conventional science.
In fact, did you know of the 252 drugs considered “basic and essential” by the World Health Organization were “exclusively of flowering plant origin.” Drugs like codeine, quinine, and morphine all contain plant-derived ingredients.
Did you know, for example, that ginkgo is one of the oldest homeopathic plants and a key herb in Chinese medicine? It is best known for its ability to boost brain health, and has been linked in studies with the treatment of mild to moderate dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Recent research into ginkgo is looking into a component that can help diabetes.
You will discover in this ebook many different plants and herbs that can be used as treatments for various ailments.

Magical Benefits of Allspice

Allspice, also known as Jamaica pepper, myrtle pepper, pimenta, or pimento. The name might suggest it is a blend, but allspice is a single spice made from dried unripe berries of the Pimenta dioica, a midcanopy tree that is native to the Greater Antilles, southern Mexico, and Central America.

It was Christopher Columbus, who discovered the berry in Jamaica on his second voyage to the New World, and was responsible for bringing the spice to Western Europe. After he incorrectly guessed that it was a pepper, Columbus brought it home to Spain where it was named “pimienta” (Spanish for pepper) by Diego Álvarez Chanca.

The flavour of allspice brings to mind cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and pepper. Allspice is used in Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and Latin American cuisines, among others.

Allspice is one of the most important spices in Jamaican cuisine. Among other traditional uses, it’s often used in Jamaican jerk seasoning, pickling, sausage preparation, and curries.

Allspice can be used in ground form or whole. Once ground, allspice can quickly lose its pungency. Ground spices are more intense than whole cloves or berries.

Allspice contains a chemical called eugenol, which might explain some of its traditional uses for toothache, muscle pain, and as a germ-killer.

Like other spices, the quantity of allspice used in cooking isn’t usually enough to be nutritionally significant, but it has been used as an essential oil and medicinally due to its high concentration of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory eugenol as a remedy for colds, menstrual cramps, and upset stomach.
