A quick‑reference guide for emergencies in the hills

1. FIRST STEPS

Keep calm
Give first aid
Keep casualty warm, dry, sheltered
Assess if they can walk – if not, prepare to call for help

2. CALLING FOR HELP

Dial: 999 → Ask for Police → Mountain Rescue
If no signal: try 112, move to higher ground, or send a text (if registered with EmergencySMS).

3. INFORMATION TO GIVE (ATMIST)

A – Age/details
T – Time of incident
M – Mechanism (fall, twist, etc.)
I – Injuries
S – Signs (bleeding, response level)
T – Treatment given

4. EXTRA INFORMATION

Your name & phone number
Grid reference + description of location
Hazards (steep ground, scree)
Weather (wind, visibility, cloud)
Numbers in group
Colours of clothing / group shelter
Other phone numbers in group

SAMPLE (if casualty is conscious)

Signs/symptoms
Allergies
Medication
Past medical history
Last food/drink
Events leading up to incident

5. IF NO SIGNAL OR LOW VISIBILITY

Whistle: 6 blasts = help • 3 blasts = reply
Torch: 6 flashes

6. WHILE WAITING FOR RESCUE

Keep casualty warm & protected
Share food/water
Monitor consciousness
Prepare group shelter
Conserve phone battery
Stay together unless instructed otherwise

7. HELICOPTER SAFETY

Arms up in a Y = “Yes, we need help”
Secure rucksacks & loose kit
Remove group shelter before helicopter arrives
DO NOT grab lowered cables
Night: do NOT shine torch at aircraft
