🐴 5 Signs Your Horse May Need Physiotherapy

Is your horse not quite moving or behaving like they used to? Subtle changes can be early indicators of discomfort or underlying issues. Physiotherapy can help improve mobility, comfort, and performance before small problems become bigger ones.

Keep an eye out for these common signs:
βœ”οΈ Resistance in transitions
βœ”οΈ Uneven muscle development
βœ”οΈ Shortened stride
βœ”οΈ Difficulty bending
βœ”οΈ Behaviour changes under saddle

Early assessment and treatment can make a huge difference to your horse’s wellbeing and performance. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, feel free to get in touch to chat about how physiotherapy could help.

πŸ“© Message to book or ask any questions.
πŸ’™ Your horse’s comfort is our priority.

🦴🐴 How does backing up help horses with Sacroiliac (SI) issues?

Backing up (rein-back) is a great rehabilitation and strengthening exercise for the SI region.

The Sacroiliac joint connects the pelvis to the spine and is responsible for transferring power from the hind end forward and stability. 🐎

When this area is weak horses may show signs of:
πŸ”· Weak canter
πŸ”· Poor transitions
πŸ”· Struggling to engage behind
πŸ”· Loss of impulsion

Backing up benefits πŸ‘‡πŸ»
βœ… Strengthens key support muscles (Gluteals, Hamstrings and Deep core muscles)
βœ… Improves Pelvic stability & Control
βœ… Encourages Lumbosacral flexion which reduces overload through the Lumbar spine and SI area
βœ… Improves Hindlimb proprioception

⚠️ Important:
βœ”οΈ Slow steps
βœ”οΈ Maintaining straightness
βœ”οΈ Maintains spinal flexion
βœ”οΈ Moving in diagonal pairs
βœ”οΈ Only carry out if safe for horse & handler

Physiotherapy can help by:
πŸ”΅ Assessing movement & biomechanics to identify compensatory patterns, asymmetries, weakness and areas of pain
πŸ”΅ Manual therapy to reduce muscle tension, improve joint mobility and restore normal range of motion
πŸ”΅ Targeted exercise prescription through specific rehabilitation exercises to successfully strengthen
πŸ”΅ Progressive loading to ensure exercises are introduced and progressed at the right time to avoid overload or regression
πŸ”΅ Working alongside the vet to ensure appropriate investigations if needed

‼️Remember close collaborations with your Vet ensures underlying pathology is addressed and that physiotherapy and exercise rehabilitation is safe, appropriate and effective for each individual horse‼️

Before and after treatment on this lovely boy on the weekend🩡

Winter can be tough on our horses- reduced turnout, colder temperatures, and slippery, muddy fields can increase the risk of injuries and muscles strains. Regular physiotherapy sessions can make a huge difference in keeping horses supple, and performing at their best throughout the winter months❄️

🌟Just a reminder the £10 off all first appointments is still valid until the end of December 🌟

Feel free to message me with any queries or to get booked in!🐴

🌟Special offer until December 2025🌟

Β£10 off all first appointments from October- December 2025 πŸ’΅

As we come into the colder months, your animals, young and old, could benefit from physiotherapy more than ever. The drop in temperatures can make stiff joints and sore muscles even worse. Regular physiotherapy through the winter months can ease discomfort, improve mobility and keep your animal active and happy throughout winter🐾🐎
