World Kindness Day.
Whilst I love the idea of world kindness day and the fact that someone may spread some happiness your way, when on another day they may not. Kindness shouldn’t just be something we think about on one day out of 365 days, it should be around continuously for everyone to benefit from. Whether it be showering kindness on loved ones, being kind to yourself or a complete stranger, kindness has all sorts of psychological benefits.
The giver and the receiver both benefit from kindness. That fuzzy warm feeling we get instead when we give or receive kindness increases our serotonin levels and gives us a feeling of satisfaction and well-being. Now who doesn’t need that right now!
Kindness also helps to reduce anxiety and stress. If you are having a bad day and someone buys you flowers, that gives you a sense of belonging, a sense that you do matter and that there are some kind people in the world. You will also remember this feeling and when you find someone else in the same position as you were, you are more likely to pay that kindness forward.
None of us know, what goes on behind closed doors, we don’t know how any person we pass on the street is feeling or what struggles they are facing. That person may be suffering from depression and feelings of isolation or just feeling different from everyone else. Make a connection with them, just flash your best smile their way. Connectedness makes people feel they belong, that they are worthy of being noticed and that they do matter.
Mother Theresa once said, "We cannot do great things in this world, just small things with great love”.
Make someone feel that they matter, unleash the magic and spread some kindness today and always. ###
