🌱 Thinking about starting your recovery journey? Here’s What to Expect

The early days can feel like a rollercoaster; ups, downs, and everything in between. But here’s the truth:

✔️ Motivation comes and goes. That’s normal.
✔️ Your brain is adjusting. Cravings, anxiety, or exhaustion might hit.
✔️ Emotions feel stronger without substances, but that’s healing.
✔️ Not everyone will understand, and that’s okay. Prioritise those who do.

Recovery isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress. Swipe through to learn what to expect.

Stigma can be a major barrier to seeking support for people with drug or alcohol challenges. The words we use can play a crucial role in changing this.

Co***ne and your mental health: What you NEED to know 👇

🧠 It disrupts your brain’s natural chemistry, making it harder to feel happy without the drug.
🧠 It increases the risk of anxiety, paranoia, and depression.
🧠 Long-term use can even lead to psychosis.

Co***ne is never just a ‘party drug’ - its mental health costs can be life-changing.

💨 Crack vs. Co***ne - what’s the difference?

They come from the same drug but hit differently:
🌀 Co***ne = powder | Snorted, injected, or rubbed on gums
🔥 Crack = rock form | Usually smoked or injected, hits the brain in seconds

⏳ Highs:
⚡ Co***ne lasts 15-30 mins (shorter if injected)
⚡ Crack peaks in 5 mins, fades in 10-15

🚨 Risks:
💔 Co***ne: Heart attacks, strokes, nose damage
🫁 Crack: Lung damage, heart damage, severe mental health issues

Dry January is a chance to take a break from alcohol for many, but for some, stopping suddenly can be risky.

If you’re physically dependent on alcohol, it’s not about willpower; quitting all at once can be dangerous, even life-threatening.

Cutting back doesn’t mean stopping altogether. It might look like having fewer drinks in a session or adding an extra drink-free day each week. Even small changes can make a big difference.

Keeping a drinks diary can also help you see how much you’re drinking and where you can safely cut down.

From there, set small, realistic goals like “only one drink after dinner today.” These gradual steps build confidence and help you move in the direction you want.

And if you slip back into old habits, remember: a setback is just a moment, not a failure. Progress isn’t lost. It’s an opportunity to learn your triggers, manage cravings, and find new ways to cope. 💙

The festive season can bring up all kinds of feelings.

Whether it’s certain people, places, or emotions, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Knowing your triggers when it comes to drugs or alcohol can help you feel more in control.

💡 If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to check in with yourself:
🔹 What situations might feel difficult?
🔹 Who can you reach out to for support? Are there friends or family you can lean on?
🔹 What helps you feel grounded?

You deserve to feel safe and supported, especially at this time of year. If you're struggling, you’re not alone.

Want to learn more about managing your feelings? Chat to one of our trained recovery workers via our webchat. Visit wearewithyou.org.uk

Did you know that, according to the NHS, to keep health risks from alcohol low, men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis?
In the Scotland, alcohol is often a big part of Hogmanay festivities. For many of us, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a drink to celebrate, but we also know that this time of year can lead to people going overboard and harming themselves or others.
Tips for safer drinking this season:

🗓️ Spread your drinking over 3+ days if you drink more than 14 units a week
🚫 Try to have some drink-free days each week
✅Know your limits and try stick to them
🥂 If you’re drinking at home, measure your drinks - it’s easy to lose track
If you’re feeling worried or anxious about coping with the festive season, please remember that support is available 💙.
