Excessive levels of anxiety can disrupt performance. However, controlled breathing is a scientifically proven technique to regulate nerves and enhance physical performance.

By dedicating just 5-8 minutes a day to focused breathwork, you’ll soon notice significant improvements in concentration, anxiety regulation, and confidence.

Whether you’re managing pre-game nerves, an in-game wobble, or just everyday stress, this simple yet effective exercise can help.

Try it for yourself - at home, in bed, or before a game. Remain present and experience the calming effects of deep, controlled breathing 🧠

Understanding Somatic Anxiety:

Anxiety affects us both in our minds (cognitive) and our bodies (somatic), but managing it is vital for performance. Here are two techniques to decrease somatic anxiety immediately:

1. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR):

- Sit or lie comfortably.
- Tense each muscle group for 5-8 seconds.
- Then, relax for 20-30 seconds.
- Start from your feet and work up to your face.

2. Deep Breathing:

- Sit or lie comfortably.
- Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold for 4 seconds.
- Finally, exhale through your mouth for 6 seconds.
- Repeat for 2-3 minutes.

Try these techniques prior to performance or within your day-to-day lives to relieve anxiety quickly!

Hi, I'm Oliver Spink and I am a Sport and Performance Psychologist in training completing my Professional Doctorate at the University of Portsmouth.

Following my experience as a goalkeeper for Ipswich Town Academy, I developed a passion for mental health and improving sporting performance.
I founded One More with the intention of providing others with the psychological support needed to achieve their potential both on and off the field. I aim to give clients the tools necessary to foster and uphold consistent high performance output, and to amplify the need for mental health advocation in sport.
