The Times (Oliver Moody) reports that staples of middle class picnics, including many types of ginger beer and sparkling elderflower drinks, contain more sugar than Coca-Cola, according to a study by anti-sugar campaigners. Several brands of cloudy lemonade, such as Sainsbury’s Waitrose and Fentimans, were also found to have more than ten teaspoons of sugar per serving. In all, four out of five sweetened drinks contained more sugar than the World Health Organisation’s recommended daily limit of six teaspoons. The Health Secretary should set national targets for sugar reduction as a matter of urgency, said Graham MacGregor, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Queen Mary, University of London.

In a front-page story, The Times (Chris Smyth) reports that one in three Britons is on course to develop diabetes, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. Blood sugar problems have tripled in a decade, with almost half of people in middle age having the early signs of diabetes, the researchers found. The NHS could be bankrupted by the soaring cost of tackling the condition, they warned. Lead author Arch Mainous, of the University of Florida, used data on a sample of about 20,000 people from the Health Survey for England to study rates of ‘pre-diabetes’. In 2003, 11.6% of adults had the condition, rising to 35.3% in 2011.

The Daily Mirror (Staff Reporter) says MPs will warn today that lack of exercise is killing 37,000 a year. They will call for a Cabinet minister dedicated to tackling the ‘inactivity pandemic’, which costs the NHS £10bn. Some 17% of premature deaths from serious conditions are caused by inactivity.

The Times (Oliver Moody) leads with the news that a study into global weight problems led by the University of Washington in Seattle found Britain had one of the fastest increases in obesity among developed nations since 1980, with 29.2% of British females under the age of 19 classed as obese or overweight. In Europe, only Iceland and Malta have worse rates of obesity. John Newton, chief knowledge officer at the government agency Public Health England, described the findings, published today in the Lancet, as ‘worrying’, suggesting that there is ‘constant pressure to eat unhealthy food’ in the UK.

The Daily Express (Jo Willey) adds that the NHS is currently spending £5.1bn a year treating obesity-related illnesses. Professor Hermann Toplak, president-elect of the European Association for the Study of Obesity, commented: ‘The modernisation of our world, with all the technology around us, has led to physical inactivity on all levels.’

As the sun comes out we all start doing more outside. What can we do as you gym to help with that? Is it starting a running group, having special outdoor class or something else? Give us ideas and we'll see what we can do.
