ποΈ Glaucoma Awareness β Understand the Different Types & Protect Your Vision
By Kirkburton Eyecare
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide. Often called the βsilent thief of sightβ, it damages the optic nerve and can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated. But with early detection, glaucoma can be managed to protect your eyesight.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions caused by increased pressure inside the eye or damage to the optic nerve. It usually develops slowly and without obvious symptoms in the early stages β which is why regular eye tests are vital.
Types of Glaucoma
There are several types of glaucoma, but the two most common are:
πΉ Open-Angle Glaucoma (Primary Glaucoma)
β’ The most common form
β’ Develops slowly, often without pain or vision changes early on
β’ Detected through routine eye exams
πΉ Angle-Closure Glaucoma
β’ Less common but more urgent
β’ Caused by a sudden blockage of fluid drainage in the eye
β’ Symptoms may include severe eye pain, headaches, blurred vision, and nausea
β’ Requires immediate medical attention
Other less common types include:
β’ Normal-Tension Glaucoma β Optic nerve damage even with normal eye pressure
β’ Secondary Glaucoma β Caused by another eye injury, condition, or medication
β’ Congenital Glaucoma β Rare, present at birth due to abnormal eye development
