In lessons, students will often learn how to reduce stress through active rest. You find a space on the floor with a small pile of books under your head and learn to notice what’s going on. A teacher will talk you through the basics.

It’s very different to resting in bed. You are working through your body to allow and encourage whole body awareness. I often notice my breathing changes and becomes deeper and calmer.

Over the years I have found active rest has transformed my life and dramatically reduced stress in my life.

The Alexander Technique is a great way to recharge your battery and learn how to let go of unnecessary tension.

I love horses and seeing the relationship and understanding of the person riding the horse build over time. There is a huge different between asking a horse to do something or demanding they listen. I like this photo as it shows the horse at peace, ready to move but also free to enjoy connection and a break.

For many people, their lives are controlled by technology phones and computers. We carry phones around all the time and respond to messages and calls immediately, often forgetting our own freedom.

We are very much in the reigns of technology. Phones are guiding our attention and our time and this habit is often completely unnoticed.

Many students come for Alexander Technique lessons with back or neck pain and the clinical trials show just how effective the technique is for reducing these problems. However, what lessons consistently show is how we can free ourselves from unhelpful habits that often go unnoticed. For example, if a difficult text message lands on your phone, or you have a difficult call so often our response is automatic. By stopping at a train station and looking up at how people stare at their phones we begin to notice the reigns of technology and the increasingly tight hold this has on our lives.

We do have a choice how we respond. We do not need to be trapped and tied to the reigns of technology. And when people realise this they can use the technology more effectively and look after their own health and wellbeing.

Don’t let your loved ones suffer in silence. If you know someone that is suffering with back pain, let them know about The Alexander Technique. A major clinical study has shown that one-to-one lessons in the Alexander Technique lead to significant long-term benefit for people with chronic low back pain. After one year, compared with people who received usual GP care, those who had taken 24 Alexander lessons had significantly:

less back pain (3 days of pain per month versus 21 days)
less incapacity
and improved quality of life.

The study showed 86% reduction in number of days in pain and significantly improved quality of life.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

The Alexander Technique is not just about improving posture. Very often people do see dramatic improvements in how they stand but a teacher will focus on teaching you a new way of being, where you notice your habits and the things you do - without noticing. You then you learn how to stop and how to think differently.

In lessons you can find a way to stop doing the wrong things so that the right things start to happen. For example if you are sitting at a desk and your back is hurting, it won’t help long term to just sit up straight. Very often there will be a pattern of muscular tension that is causing a person to pull down and slump in their chair.

Always look for a STAT registered teacher who will be fully insured and will have completed at least 16,000 hours of training.

The Alexander technique does help with posture and back pain but it’s so much more than this. You learn to focus your attention on how you do things or the “means whereby” and less on the end result or “end gaining”. In my case I found these lessons were dramatically effective at reducing stress and tension.

So at mile 20 of the .marathon.half.10k.tri when things were tough my focus was on my attitude to the marathon, on reducing tension where I could on “thinking in activity” which allowed a very different way of being. By applying the Alexander Technique during training runs and on race day it meant I completed the marathon without injuries in barefoot shoes thanks to

After the stroke there were so many times I struggled to walk 200 meters due to dystonia or my left foot turning inwards. The Technique gave me a new approach to life and a way to manage a life changing stroke which could have left me struggling with daily life.

A special thanks and .sportsmassage and the team at who have been so supportive and helpful during the training.

Thank you for the many donations to the so far we have raised more than £1500.

When I had a stroke I really didn’t think it would be possible to run a marathon. There is help out there and you recover one step at a time.

Very grateful to and for their encouragement advice and very skilled suggestions. I would not have been able to do the marathon without you.
j.john you are the most cheerful running companion - thank you.

Finished my first marathon in Chester on Sunday for the stroke association. Five years ago I was struggling to walk 200 meters due to dystonia on my left side from a childhood stroke.

By mastering the Alexander Technique I have been able to finish the 26 miles. If found the second half very difficult but was able to complete the run without any injuries on very tired legs. I focused on my attitude to the run on keeping things moving. I allowed my back to work and encouraged length through my spine so when my foot was sore I could let go of tension.

Even Alexander Technique teachers get tired legs and hit the “wall.”

Thank you to everyone for their support and for all the donations to the - we raised more than £1356 to date.

A huge thank you to and and everyone at I could not have done this without you.

Special thanks to .j.john for all her encouragement and for keeping me going.

Really enjoyed doing this running workshop and working with some very talented individuals.

The theme of the course was breathing. F.M. Alexander used to be known as the breathing man. We looked at how we can undo unnecessary tension so that our lungs and back could work effectively. Alexander said: "Prevent the things you have been doing and you are half way home."

Lots of people find when they run, they struggle and feel they are gasping for breath. One way to address this is really taking things slowly. We looked at how we were standing before we took a step and focused on allowing our necks to be free1.

I believe that as humans we were born to run. By allowing the back to work and not getting in the way, the runner is able to move more efficiently.

If you have any questions please let me know.
