We’ve started mapping out the boundaries of our dream apiary.

We just need to finish mowing the middle, move the hives that are currently outside the boundary, and then start building up our hives!

We’re going to line the perimeter with flower beds and fill them with pollinator-friendly plants to screen the hives from the wind and curious passers-by (with 2 legs, 4, or many more!)

Spring is here and the property is coming alive! Can’t wait to see what the bees love the most. #

We've just finished extracting, straining and jarring up the honey from this season.

Our honey is unfiltered and unpasteurised. We keep things cool to preserve nutrition.

We'll be thinking about nutrition today in our series on responsible beekeeping.

Do you know how much honey you need to leave for your bees, if any? Do you ever need to supplement their diet?

Sharing for awareness. The Asian hornet is an invasive species in the UK and is causing devastation to honeybee populations across Europe. Check the NBU website for information on how to identify and report sightings.

Do not attempt to deal with them yourself if you do come across them, they can be quite nasty.

Today in our series on responsible beekeeping we'll be looking at hive inspections.

A responsible beekeeper will regularly check their hives to make sure everything is as it should be. We check ours weekly during Spring and Summer.

Over the next few weeks we'll be looking at responsible beekeeping.

What is it? How can you achieve it?

Today we'll start off with respecting and understanding your bees. Basically, take care not to hurt or harm them and do your research so you know what you're doing!

Swipe to see the information we've put together on this and some good places to start for all that research you'll be doing.

During our inspection last week we managed to capture the . This is where you see a sort of rainbow in a circle. The will be in the middle with a ring of around them and then (which will turn into honey) on the outside.

This picture has captured half of the circle. The pale yellow cells at the bottom are baby bees, the brighter yellow and red cells in the middle are the pollen and the clearer cells toward the top are the nectar. The bees are busy working on all three sections - taking care of the babies, dropping off pollen and turning the nectar into honey!

If you're looking after bees yourself it's good to look out for these perfect frames to confirm that your hive is healthy and progressing.

During spring and summer we check on the bees weekly. This involves taking the frames out one by one so we can see how the bees are doing.

On our last inspection we were happy to see the bees were generally happy. Our only concern was when we couldn't spot any new eggs or the queen in one of the hives, which is very sad... We're not sure what has happened to her (the hive may have decided to kick her out!).

Thankfully we noticed on another frame that the bees are busy creating queen cells, so the hive will have a new queen, and should be back to normal, soon!

If you have any questions about bees (ours or in general!) please comment or send us a message.
