"You must purge yourself before finding faults in others. When you see a mistake in somebody else, try to find if you are making the same mistake. This is the way to take judgment and to turn it into improvement. Do not look at others' bodies with envy or with superiority. All people are born with different constitutions. Never compare with others. Each one's capacities are a function of his or her internal strength. Know your capacities and continually improve upon them."

Ardha Chandrasana

From Utthita Trikonasana: bend the right leg and extend the right arm away, placing the hand down about a foot from the right leg. Move the left leg in, lift and extend the leg up level with the hip. The torso rotates forward so that the lower ribs are not hidden, the toes of the lifted leg also rotate forward. The top arm lengthens along the torso or is lifted and extended. Repeat on the left side.

• Tones the lower region of the spine
• Strengthens legs and knees
• improves gastric troubles

It's National Stress Awareness Week. People who practice yoga know how effective it can be for physical and mental health. One of our students recently said 'it's like a 'factory re-set' for the brain'. The chin lock in Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand) stimulates the vegus nerve which calms the mind. If you haven't yet mastered it there are many variations which achieve a similar effect.

Virabhadrasana 1

Named after Virabhadra, a warrior created by Shiva from a lock of his hair — a being born from light and fire to restore balance after loss.

The arms are raised dynamically above the head, palms join. The back leg extends strongly down while the forward leg bends toward a right angle. The spine is turning in the direction of the bent leg. The chest is open and lifted and the gaze directed towards the joined palms.

• Full expansion of the chest aids deep breathing
• Relives stiffness in shoulders, neck and back
• Tones legs and strengthens spine

On Diwali we celebrate the victory of light over darkness 🪔 In Iyengar yoga we work to restore the inner light - all are welcome 🪔

Becoming a teacher is not just about knowing techniques or earning certificates. True teaching comes from clarity, inquiry, and lived experience.

Here are 7 qualities of an effective teacher:
1️⃣ Teach from Experience, Not Just Credentials
Certificates may open doors, but wisdom comes from life and practice. A true teacher shares knowledge that endures.
2️⃣ Clarity Over Quantity
More techniques don’t mean better teaching. A good teacher explains the why behind the practice, guiding students toward self-understanding.
3️⃣ Encourage Inquiry
Instead of blind acceptance, students are inspired to question, explore, and reflect on contradictions within themselves.
4️⃣ Go Beyond Herd Mentality
Teaching isn’t about popularity or followers—it’s about integrity, authenticity, and truth.
5️⃣ Guide Inner Exploration
A good teacher leads students into the mysteries of their own mind—its nature, habits, and relationship with life.
6️⃣ Offer Practical, Helpful Guidance
Whether through breathwork, food habits, or mental resilience, teaching must serve well-being in real, tangible ways.
7️⃣ Preserve Personal Clarity & Health
Teachers must embody balance and ensure their own peace and health remain intact while guiding others.

👉 In essence, a teacher is not a transmitter of information, but a compass that directs students to clarity, strength, and peace.

Savasana

Position the body in the centre of the mat and lay comfortably. The arms and legs are apart and the palms face upward. The body is completely relaxed, the mind remains conscious and aware.

“First, learn to achieve the silence of the body. Then control the subtle movements of the breath. Next learn about the silence of the mind and the emotions and then of the intellect. From there proceed to learn and study about the silence of the Self. It is not until then that the ego or small self (ahamkara) of the practitioner can merge with his self (Atman). The fluctuations of the mind and intellect cease, the ‘I’ or ego disappears and Savasana provides an experience of unalloyed bliss.”
