Christmas survival tip number 4. Problem solving skills can help you reduce a sense of overwhelm.

When you focus on small achievable tasks it takes your brain out of the emotional, survival part of the brain where overwhelm lives into the logical, structured part which can soften panic and bring clarity.

They can also provide a sense of control, of being able to take steps towards something and learn something rather than feeling helpless, bringing a sense of empowerment.

They can also create a sense of safety through patterns of predictability and structure which the nervous system interprets as safety as it has a focus.

Each task or problem solved reinforces the belief you can navigate challenges and of being able to cope.

Problem solving also keeps us in the here and now Esther than the negative future based thoughts that worry and anxiety brings. Helping us to stay grounded.

What is your favourite problem solving game or activity? Let us know in the comments if you want to 😁

2nd Christmas survival tip - find textures that comfort soothe and release tension and meet touch based sensory needs this also could include using things like weighted blankets different temperatures etc. it might feel a common tip but when we feel overwhelmed we can often forget oldies but goodies. Which of these fidgets would you choose? Me I like the stones at the bottom and hold the smooth in 1 hand and the rough in the other and focus in on the different textures and temperatures to help me feel grounded.
