Static stretches vs dynamic stretches
Which is better and when?
Static stretches are where you hold a position in order to stretch a muscle for example standing on one foot and and holding onto your other ankle to stretch your quads out
Dynamic stretching is where the stretch is carried out throughout a movement for example doing heel flicks to stretch out your quads.
Research has found that static stretching before exercise can actually decrease performance rather than enhance it. However the opposite has been found with dynamic stretching which can have a positive impact on speed, power and agility as well as reducing the risk of injury in all athletes. They can also be linked to the sport/activity you are going to be doing better preparing your body.
Dynamic stretches can be used before exercise as well as after as a way to transition from exercise to static stretching which can aid muscle recovery and relaxes the body
