Leeds Student Community First Responders

Leeds Student Community First Responders Leeds Uni Union Best Overall Society 2021-2022! on instagram What is a Community First Responder (CFR)?

CFRs volunteer with the ambulance service and aim to reach 999 emergencies in their local community in the vital few minutes before the ambulance crew arrives. Their role ranges from initiating life-saving CPR, to delivering oxygen, to reassuring and comforting a patient when they need it most. What makes Leeds Student Community First Responders (LSCFR) different? The role of a student CFR has been purpose-built around the schedule of those studying at university. Our criteria for responders is modified, and also all the benefits of being part of a uni society are included! We volunteer in pairs, connecting you with a variety of your people from across the university. We also have a great social calendar, catering to drinkers and non-drinkers alike, and we also run exciting hands-on events to brush up on your medical skills and learn new things; in the past we have teamed up with the Police, Mountain Rescue, and Emergency Medicine doctors. We are one of the most flexible volunteering opportunities you will come across, and joining LSCFR is a great way to use some of your spare time at uni to meet new people, have fun, and also give back to the community at the same time. Great for some pre-hospital medicine experience too!

Our Story

Community First Responders are volunteers who provide immediate and potentially life-saving care to seriously ill patients in their community during the vital minutes before an ambulance arrives. Volunteers give a few hours of their time a fortnight during which time they are on call for the ambulance service to respond in pairs to calls in their local area. In December 2016, we recruited and trained our first team of Leeds medical students to take on this role. Since then, we have trained over 80 students from medical, nursing and other courses who have volunteered time with us to support their local community. This is an opportunity for students from all years to provide a life-saving service to their local community, as well as gaining experience dealing with the acutely ill patient in the pre-hospital environment. For all queries email secretary@cfrleeds.org.uk Like the page for updates on our work and to find out how to get involved!
