As a Recognised Birth & Postnatal Doula & certified Hypnobirthing Teacher, I'm an expert in my field and I can help you to increase your chances of having a positive experience. I'm Julia, an Antenatal, Birth & Postnatal Doula & Hypnobirthing teacher, from Leeds, West Yorkshire. I help them to prepare for their birth and postnatal period, helping them to have a confident, calm and comfortable birth. I can help them to go from feeling anxious about their birth, to feeling excited and helping them to increase their chances of having a positive birth experience.

Today I have been at LGI Clarendon wing. As part of Leeds MNVP, I have been talking to families at the antenatal clinic and fetal assessment.

I spoke to a number of patients who were either waiting to have scans, Glucose Tolerance Tests (GTT) or appointments with consultants. Their feedback is so helpful in understanding what is working well at Leeds maternity and where improvements are needed.

Ever noticed how escalators work a bit like induction of labour? 🤰✨

Once you step onto an escalator, you’re automatically carried along a set path at a set pace. There’s no pausing, no stepping sideways, no choosing your own rhythm. Everyone gets moved forward on the same conveyor belt, whether or not that pace actually suits them.

Induction can feel similar — a process designed to move everyone along in a predictable way, even though every body, every baby, and every birth has its own natural timing.

But here’s the truth: you’re not an escalator passenger. You’re the one in control. You can ask questions, explore options, and make choices that feel right for you. Birth isn’t a one-speed system — it’s a unique journey, and you deserve the space and support to move at your pace.

As we approach Christmas, the conversations around induction hot up more than other times of the year. The stats speak for themselves! It’s the same every year. That induction of labour spike increases in December.

Make sure you are well informed about induction of labour and understand the risks and benefits for you and your baby. Induction is NOT the same as spontaneous labour and it DOES increase the risk of further intervention.

Read my latest blog post about how I was denied pain relief during labour!

“Oh sweetheart, you can’t have gas and air until you are in established labour. Don’t worry though, we’ll be getting you induced soon and you can then have some gas and air.”

This is what the midwife said to me whilst I was in labour. In actual fact, I was in transition at this point. Transition is the bit at the end of the first stage of labour and just before the 2nd stage begins. (the pushing stage).

For anyone currently pregnant and considering pain relief during labour, it is your human right to pain relief at any stage of your labour and you should not be denied any form of pain management if you request it.

My blog also discusses premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and how this can start the ticking “24 hour clock” and the risk of infection after the waters have gone.

“Evidence has shown that in today’s world, the 24 hour clock rule is no longer valid.”

What did I get up to on this rainy Tuesday morning? ☔️🤔

Is HypnoBirthing just for pregnancy and birth?

No, not at all! HypnoBirthing is for pregnancy, birth and your future too. The skills that you learn on a HypnoBirthing course are skills for life.

Birth really is unpredictable and that’s why I emphasise so much about doing thorough birth preparation and making a birth plan/birth preferences plan.

Yesterday evening I supported another amazing birth couple. They have been on such a twisty journey these last few weeks and their plan A changed to plan B and even plan C was starting to be a possibility. However, baby had other ideas and it was soon back to plan A.

Mum and baby smashed it and they were incredible. It never ceases to amaze me about how fantastic the human body is and how strong women are! 💪🏻🥰

♥️Helping more families to have positive birth and postnatal experiences!♥️

🥰 This morning I’ve been supporting a family who are expecting identical twins and I’ve been doing some birth preparation with them.

There is obviously a lot to think about when having a baby, but when it’s twins there are a lot more informed decisions to be made. Being knowledgeable, confident and informed is going to be so important for this couple.

I know that this twin Mummy to-be is going to be fab, as she has a positive mindset and knows what she wants and how important the birth experience is for women. She also knows that her babies may need extra support.

I’m so grateful that I will also be supporting this family postnatally too and helping them to adjust to new life with twins.👯

✨This evening I will be visiting a couple who had their baby earlier this week and I will be seeing them for postnatal doula support. Having support in those early days of having a baby is so important. It really makes a difference to a new family when they get support from an experienced professional doula, who knows how to help.

📞I am also on call for a lovely birth doula couple, who are planning a home birth and their baby could arrive any day. Let’s hope the weather has cooled down a bit before baby decides to arrive! 🥵
