Our Clinical Director, Kay Ganguly, and Helen Maskill had the pleasure of delivering an insightful presentation to the COP team at Irwin Mitchell in Leeds on early intervention for children with complex disabilities โจ
The presentation highlighted evidence linking significant spinal deformities in children with complex neuro disability and their increased mortality risk, owing to progressive respiratory compromise and reduced functional capacity. The importance of proactive, anticipatory management and the need for early intervention.
Discussion also focused on developmental milestones as indicators of central nervous system maturation, and how delayed or altered movement patterns influence long-term neurological development.
Early intervention and neuroplasticity are the key drivers of learned motor patterns in the pediatric population, and how a block of intensive rehab early on can be transformative, maximising a childโs potential & setting them on a developmental trajectory for executive & higher cognitive function.
We talked about the critical need to frame care around function, participation, and environmental impact rather than diagnosis alone, per the ICF framework, as well as the legal considerations, including safeguarding responsibilities, best-interest decision-making, and statutory duties when supporting children with complex needs.
Thank you, COP team, for having us ๐
