I specialise in neurodiversity and mental health, and absolutely love studies. Autistic people often have battered self-esteem due to living in a world not designed for us (which creates ongoing overwhelm) so when I read a study like this, it's exciting. We're not asocial - we're differently social. And that difference largely benefits society. I'm hopeful that as more studies come out and as the lived experience of autists becomes more valued, the stereotype shifts and we create a society where autistic individuals don't grow up trying to fit into a system that traumatises us.

“Autistic individuals showed enhanced prosocial behavior. Compared with non-autistic participants, autistic adults were more generous towards people they felt less close to. Our findings support an emerging view that while autistic people often face challenges navigating their social worlds, autism is associated with more prosocial behavior.”
