Growing People

Growing People Growing People uses horticultural therapy to support people who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health in North Herts.

Sessions take place in our beautiful orchard garden and are led by qualified horticultural therapists. Our aim is to use the healing nature of gardens to support you on your journey to recovery. You can self-refer to our service, or be referred by a support worker or other service provider. We welcome anyone who wants to improve their mental health, so there's no need for previous gardening experience! We run four half-day horticultural therapy sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays, and if you are interested in joining us, please do get in touch. Call us on 07794 347283, e-mail enquiries@growing-people.org.uk, or drop in for a chat at The Letchworth Centre for Healthy Living, Hitchin Rd, Letchworth, SG6 3NA. Summer may be winding down, but there’s still lots going on in our therapy garden.

On our Gardeners’ plots, we have aubergine and kohlrabi ready to harvest and flourishing French marigolds.

There’s even some late carrots that a Gardener has put in to try and sneak in a late autumn harvest! 👨‍🌾💚

It’s a bit of a funny time, as we’re right in the thick of harvesting, but also putting in late seeds and seedlings to give us something to look after and enjoy in the darker months to come.

Now we just have to decide how to cook all this lovely veg - recipe ideas are very welcome! 😀😋💚

Whether we love them or loathe them, insects are our friends! 🦋💚

This month we’ve been finding ladybirds (lots!), cabbage white and comma butterflies, jersey tiger moths, beetles, crickets, bees and a interesting pale tussock moth caterpillar amongst the many amazing insects found in our gardens. It’s always nice to make new friends! 🦋🐝🐞💚

They pollinate plants, break down organic matter and help maintain the balance of our ecosystem and our world would be quite dull without them. 🐝🌍💚

Insects support everything, from our food systems to the beautiful gardens we care for and these tiny creatures are the unsung heroes that we tend to overlook.

So, we salute our little friends... The Insects! 🫡🐝💚

What insect do you like or loathe and why? Comment below👇😀

We have an area in our therapy gardens dedicated to growing veg to share.

Sometimes our Gardeners will even make a special delivery to our lovely neighbours at Sadies Wholefoods Cafe. So, if you’ve been having beetroot juice there recently, you’ve probably been enjoying some of ours! 🫜🫜🫜

In exchange the Café gives us used coffee grounds, which go into feeding our soil, helping to grow veg and reduce waste at the same time! 💚

Eco friendly, yummy food and very few food miles! 🥙🍲🥗

As harvest is in full swing, we make sure we keep one eye on planning for the future. 💚

We’re sowing spinach and lots of other seeds now, to make sure we have crops to enjoy in the autumn and winter
months. 🌱🌱🌱

It only takes a few minutes to put them in, but the harvest of leafy green vegetables can bring us some happiness and a sense of achievement in the colder months when it seems like everything else is going to sleep! 🫜🥦🥕😄

Last week we had our annual Growing People BBQ. 😀

Its a time where our lovely
Gardeners and volunteers can join together in happy conversations about gardening
and enjoy good food! 🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾🥗

Thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible and took the time to prepare some lovely
dishes. 💚

We had an amazing attendance and the rain very kindly held off until we were packing up and a good day was had by all! 💚
