My grandmother Meme died last year, a few days after going to a care home in first weeks of the pandemic.

She was a Holocaust survivor who left Romanian after the N***s were billeted in her home as a teenager.

They left in the night and drove, via the Black Sea, to Haifa.

My grandpa, one of only a handful of Jewish officers in the British Army who were allowed there (he was stationed on Alexandria), met her there on recommendation of a cousin.

They fell in love in Haifa and they lived a amazing and loving life in London.

Her Romanian version of Babaganoush - called ‘vinete’ - was the liquid gold currency of our family.

I now make it every few weeks and just plucked these juicy beauties from the always delightful Taj in BTN.

I miss her.
