There is no such thing as a quick fix solution 🙃🙃
I tell my patients all the time: if I had a magic wand that could sort all your problems in one swift flick, I'd more than likely have a lot more money in the bank and be living life on my own private island ⛱
Some therapists will claim that all your problems can be sorted within a few appointments consisting of passive treatments, with no additional loading/stretching program provided 🤥
Now don't get me wrong, modalities such as sports massage, cupping, acupuncture and spinal mobilisations can all play their part in helping people feel better and begin to move more freely🤸🏼♂️
Who doesn't love a good massage?
However, when offering these modalities and treatment techniques, it is important to be open and honest about how they can help you👍🏻
Passive modalities can reduce pain and improve your joints and muscles' ability to move and stretch 🥳
Nevertheless, the benefits gained from most passive treatments are usually relatively short lived and need to be reinforced through regular exercise, including stretching and progressive loading of muscles and joints 💪🏻
Passive treatments certainly can play an important part in recovery and rehabilitation ✅
However, if a therapist is selling their passive treatments as the main component in your recovery with the absence of a progressive loading and/or stretching program, you shouldn't be surprised if and when you continue to struggle with the same issues at regular intervals in the future 🙃
The take home message?🏠
Passive treatments such as sports massage, cupping, acupuncture and mobilisations can play a key part in the rehabilitation and recovery of individuals, providing these treatments are re-enforced with a progressive loading and stretching exercise program to ensure long-term management✅
Simple. Honest. Effective.
