We all know how important rest an recovery is in optimising both performance and injury prevention👍🏻

Adequate rest and recovery ensures we have enough petrol in the tank to go again, performing tasks and moving loads to the best of our ability, with a minimised risk of injury through fatigue (see our previous post...)😴

However, whilst rest and recovery can replenish the petrol tank supplies, only through regular strength training and practicing the moving patterns we wish to perform can we increase the overall size of the petrol tank 📈

And with a bigger overall pretol tank comes more petrol 📶

And with more petrol comes consistent performance with a minimised risk of fatigue and it's associated injuries👍🏻

Rest and recovery is key 🔑

When working to move loads and perform tasks - whether this is moving boxes around the house or lifting weights in the gym - we only have so much petrol in the tank 📶

As we complete more physical activity, our petrol reserves are used up and our petrol tanks begin to empty as we continue to work hard 💨

If our petrol tanks empty completley, we begin to put ourselves at risk of injury if we continue to move excessive loads whilst in a state of fatigue 🤕

Rest and recovery is key if we wish to continue with physical activity in a safe and progressive manner whilst avoiding any unnecessary injuries as a result of working whilst fatigue 🔐

Rest and recovery comes in all shapes and sizes, but some of more important forms of rest and recovery are:

✅ Adequate sleep
✅ Adequate nutrition and hydration
✅ Rest days from training regimes
✅ Suffcient downtime

Your posture is not to blame for your aches and pains 🚫🚫

We have a tendency to point the finger at posture for a lot of aches and pains we experience 👈🏻

However, even people with 'perfect' posture get pain if they stay in one position for too long without moving🏃🏼‍♂️

So remember:

▪️Your posture is not to blame for your aches and pains

▪️you need to change posture more often to prevent pain (ie move more often)

▪️Fancy gizmos that claim to solve all your problems are usually too good to be true - the only long-term fix is regular movement and exercise

Deadlifting🏋🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♂️

Possibly my favourite of all the compound lifts, deadlifts should most definitley be included as part of any regular strengthening program💪🏻

A lot is often said about deadlifting technique - with my technique often coming under scrutiny from strangers in the gym 👀

Some people will also claim that deadlifts, unless completed with a 'perfect' technique, are a major cause of lower back injuries 🙃

This is NOT true 🐃💩

There is no exercise that poses a greater risk of injury than any others ❌

What DOES put individuals at risk of injury is moving through unfamiliar movement patterns, under loads that are unfamiliar to them ⚠️

Therefore, providing a movement pattern is familiar enough to an individual and completed under a load that is reasonably familiar, all exercises can be completed in a safe and effective manner👍🏻

This is true for deadlifting, squatting, bench/shoulder pressing, or any other loaded exercises you can think of 💭

Nevertheless, techniques can be adjusted to target certain muscle groups a little more effectively🔍

When fine-tuning a lifting technique, movement patterns will often change as a result, meaning a reduced load should be used for an interim period to ensure safe lifting until we are ready to progressively increase the load safely over time ✅

Big thanks to for the pointers today as we played around with my deadlift technique under a reduced load to ensure safe lifting through newly adjusted movement patterns👍🏻

On the pull on a Friday night👍🏻

Pull-ups are an essential part of any strength and conditioning program 💯

As is the case with deadlifting, some form of pull-up should be performed regularly as part of a consistent strengthening program ✅

There are a number of different pull-up variations, all with slightly different grip widths and positions 👐🏻

A 2020 study by Urbanczyk et al looked at different pull-up variations and their effects on the activation of different muscle groups including the rotator cuff, lattisimus dorsi and biceps brachii💪🏻

Although different variations did favour the activation of certain muscle groups more than others, in all it was suggested that all pull-up variations promote shoulder strength and stability and should be performed over a full range of motion to maximise the benefits👊🏻

Take home message?
The only wrong variation of pull-up is not including them as part of your regular strength training program🏠

There is no such thing as a quick fix solution 🙃🙃

I tell my patients all the time: if I had a magic wand that could sort all your problems in one swift flick, I'd more than likely have a lot more money in the bank and be living life on my own private island ⛱

Some therapists will claim that all your problems can be sorted within a few appointments consisting of passive treatments, with no additional loading/stretching program provided 🤥

Now don't get me wrong, modalities such as sports massage, cupping, acupuncture and spinal mobilisations can all play their part in helping people feel better and begin to move more freely🤸🏼‍♂️

Who doesn't love a good massage?

However, when offering these modalities and treatment techniques, it is important to be open and honest about how they can help you👍🏻

Passive modalities can reduce pain and improve your joints and muscles' ability to move and stretch 🥳

Nevertheless, the benefits gained from most passive treatments are usually relatively short lived and need to be reinforced through regular exercise, including stretching and progressive loading of muscles and joints 💪🏻

Passive treatments certainly can play an important part in recovery and rehabilitation ✅

However, if a therapist is selling their passive treatments as the main component in your recovery with the absence of a progressive loading and/or stretching program, you shouldn't be surprised if and when you continue to struggle with the same issues at regular intervals in the future 🙃

The take home message?🏠

Passive treatments such as sports massage, cupping, acupuncture and mobilisations can play a key part in the rehabilitation and recovery of individuals, providing these treatments are re-enforced with a progressive loading and stretching exercise program to ensure long-term management✅

Returning to activity after an injury is like when we learn to drive a car 🚘🚘

It is often a nervous process, with the individual approaching the task with added caution and care 😬

As physiotherapists, we are very much like the driving instructor - guiding you through the process in a confident and safe manor👍🏻

This will often include times when the rehabiltation process may need to slow down to allow adequate rest and recovery - much like touching the brakes on a car😴

As well as times when it is safe to put your foot back on the accelerator, pushing a little harder to keep on moving forwards and progressing👌🏻

After a period of rehabilitation, your physiotherapist will then often decide when you are ready to undertake the final tests, which upon passing will see you safely returning to activity with the close guidance no longer required 😁

Trust the process and the results will always come with the right guidance and hard work👍🏻

Weekend 1 of 2 completed and we are now at the halfway point of our AACP acupuncture course👍🏻

In exactly one week's time we will have just completed our second weekend of the course and will officially be able to begin offering both acupuncture and dry needling to all our clients as part of their physiotherapy consultations ✅

A big thank you to for all his guidance throughout this weekend and to the for providing us with such a great learning opportunity 🙏

In order to provide effective physiotherapy care, you must develop your skills of guiding and coaching people 🤝

As a physiotherapist, I often find myself employing the key principles I have learned and developed through various coaching qualifications - most recently an England Boxing coaching qualification 🔗

These skills include:
▪️Good communication
▪️Listening to clients
▪️Rapport building
▪️Providing feedback
▪️Receiving feedback
▪️Specific and realistic goal setting
▪️Accurate demonstrations of skills
▪️Evaluating and highlighting progress

Both physiotherapy and coaching utilise these skills, with an essential part of the process being the personalised goal setting and the planning of a clear roadmap towards these goals 🛣

Good communication, providing regular check-ins and feedback to highlight progress is then key to ensure clients are guided along this roadmap towards their goals 📈

Here is a short clip of me utilising and developing my coaching skills with my twin brother, working on some positive defences with the ultimate goal of further developing his defensive tools as he progresses towards his first competitive boxing match🥊

Coaching is physiotherapy and physiotherapy is coaching👌🏻

You really can't go wrong with getting strong🏋🏼‍♂️🏋️‍♀️

As we get older, building muscle and increasing strength becomes more difficult 😬

Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass and function which becomes more common as we grow older and the ability to maintain and build muscle becomes more difficult👴🏻

As a result, older age is often associated with a level of frailty and loss of general function and independence ⚠️

What is important to know is that sarcopenia is completely treatable and avoidable- with the right interventions 🦸‍♀️

So, what is this magical intervention? 🦄

Building muscle mass and overall strength through regular resistance training throughout life is the answer✅

Building muscle mass and strength is much like having a retirement fund or pension - the more you put in throughout life, the more benefit it will provide in later life 💰

There is a whole host of studies that have demonstrated improved functional independence in later life as a result of higher strength levels, meaning tasks such as walking, climbing the stairs and the ability to enjoy later life generally is maintained 🍾

You really can't go wrong with getting strong👍🏻
