The countdown to Christmas has started a little differently for Rachel McAllister, Nurse for the Stroke service at Aintree, as she received a special invitation to see the Christmas tree lights switch-on at 10 Downing Street 🎄

Representing Aintree and its Stroke Emergency Assessment Centre (SEAC), Rachel joined the Prime Minister, military personnel and other frontline workers for a celebration that recognised their dedication and service during one of the busiest times of the year.

The SEAC delivers specialist care to the region’s stroke patients, allowing them to bypass busy Emergency Departments and get the specialist care they need as quickly as possible.

Rachel was able to enjoy this unique experience with her nine-year-old son, Noah 💖

Rachel said: “It was an incredible honour to represent Aintree and our Stroke team at such a prestigious event. This wasn’t just about switching on Christmas lights, it was about shining a light on the dedication and compassion of NHS staff who work tirelessly all year round.

“Experiencing this moment with Noah made it truly unforgettable, and it’s a memory we will both treasure forever.” ☺️

Last year, the SEAC took home the Excellence in Urgent and Emergency Care trophy at the NHS Parliamentary Awards, recognising the positive impact it has had for stroke care in our region.

Aintree's Colore**al team has become the first in Europe to successfully use a form of robotic surgery to operate on early-stage re**al cancer 🙌

The Colore**al team used a £2 million da Vinci single-port (SP) robotic system, which unlike traditional surgical methods, is minimally invasive.

The robot works as an extension of the surgeon’s hand, enabling a level of precision beyond human capability 🦾

Stella Smeeton, 69, a grandmother from Cuddington, Cheshire, was the patient who benefited from this pioneering procedure. She was referred to Aintree after a complex growth, suspected to be cancerous, was found in her bowel.

Having previously had a growth removed in 2009, her local hospital determined that due to its nature, the new growth required specialist surgery. The Colore**al service based at Aintree and the Royal, is one of the busiest in the country and has been recognised as a centre for excellence since 2011.

Speaking about her experience, Stella said: “From the minute I was referred to Aintree, the care was second to none.

“Before the operation, I was told it could take three to six months to recover using traditional methods, but just a week after surgery, I’m already going on walks with my husband and enjoying time with my granddaughters.

“It’s a blessing to have access to this technology and I’m sure many more patients will benefit from it, just as I have, in the years to come.” ☺️

The da Vinci SP was part-funded by a generous £1 million donation from the Marina Dalglish Appeal. Hospitals in Liverpool have achieved several UK firsts in robotic surgery.

Surgeons operate the robot from a nearby console, using hand and foot controls to guide its miniature instruments inside the body. A high-definition 3D camera provides a live, magnified video feed, allowing for enhanced visibility throughout the procedure.

Professor Shakil Ahmed, Clinical Director for Colore**al Surgery, who lead the procedure, said: “Delivering this kind of surgery is a major milestone for us and for patients in our region and reflects the dedication and expertise of our team.

“Access to this state-of-the-art technology allows us to carry out more complex procedures with less risk. Single-port robotic surgery gives our surgeons a significantly improved chance of fully removing cancerous tissue from the colon or re**um. For patients like Stella, this means faster recovery, fewer complications and better outcomes.”

“We’re committed to ensuring the benefits of this advanced surgical technique are felt far and wide. Our ambition is to remain at the forefront of colore**al innovation and help shape the future of care both nationally and internationally.” 👏

Congratulations to our Personal Safety Team who have been awarded Team of the Month. 👏

The Personal Safety Team was nominated for their exceptional teamwork, cross-department collaboration and ‘make it happen’ attitude. The team delivers training to empower colleagues to keep and feel safe by offering knowledge and practical skills.

Since the relaunch of the Personal Safety Training Offer, the team has made an outstanding impact, delivering training to over 650 colleagues. This achievement is even more remarkable given that it has been driven by a collaborative effort across multiple departments, with trainers delivering sessions alongside their full-time roles. Their dedication to improving staff safety, confidence, and de-escalation skills has made a real difference across our hospitals.

The nomination explained:
“The success of this project is built on the positive attitude of trainers balancing their full-time roles to coordinate and support one another to continuously improve the programme, with a shared goal of making the workplace safer.

"Key achievements include adapting to high demand while ensuring sessions remain engaging and effective, working closely with various teams to make the training as accessible and relevant as possible, delivering bespoke sessions tailored to specific departments, demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness to meet emerging needs, and ensuring the training meets the highest standards by collaborating with IKON Training, an organisation accredited by the Institute of Conflict Management (ICM) and registered with the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN)."

Judges praised:
“A strong nomination that details the scale and scope of the work completed by the team to promote the safety of staff. A huge well done and thank you to you all!”

“Your teamwork is exemplary, supporting one another and communicating effectively!” ❤

Congratulations to Sharon Wright, our latest Employee of the Month. ☺️

Sharon, Divisional Governance and Assurance Officer was nominated for demonstrating remarkable versatility and her exceptional contributions to both surgery and medicine departments across our hospitals.

In the surgical department, Sharon has seamlessly adapted to fast-paced, high-pressure environments, assisting with procedures, coordinating care, and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. In medicine, she’s been equally invaluable, supporting clinical teams, managing patient needs, and bridging gaps wherever help is needed.

The nomination read:
“Sharon’s caring nature and unwavering kindness make her a pillar of support to those around her, whether it's offering a helping hand or stepping in when things get tough, Sharon never hesitates, she simply gets on with it, with grace and determination.

“Recently, she’s been entrusted with a wide range of responsibilities, many of which would overwhelm even the most seasoned professionals. Yet Sharon has tackled each task with skill, tenacity, and a calm confidence that inspires everyone she works with.

“Her ability to juggle complex demands while maintaining compassion and professionalism is truly admirable. Sharon doesn’t just rise to the occasion, she elevates it. Her presence brings reassurance, her actions bring results, and her attitude brings hope. She’s not just helping, she’s making a difference.

Judges commented: “What a lovely nomination demonstrating how appreciated and valued Sharon is by her colleagues. Sharon clearly goes the extra mile, and her conscientious approach is clearly appreciated and acknowledged by her team.” 💙

Dr Anirudh Rao, Consultant Nephrologist at our Royal Hospital, has trekked to an altitude of 17,500 feet, the equivalent climbing the Eiffel Tower 16 times, to raise vital funds for kidney research 👏

Reaching Everest Base Camp is just one of three gruelling challenges Dr Rao has taken on since April 2025, all to support the fight against chronic kidney disease, a lifelong and incurable illness 🗻

Dr Rao also conquered the infamous Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, which involves a 40-kilometre hike scaling three summits in 12 hours, and completed a 100-kilometre bike ride around Manchester.

These achievements are even more remarkable given that Dr Rao suffered a serious knee injury in a skiing accident in 2024, which left him needing 11 months of intense physiotherapy.

Speaking about his experience, Dr Rao said: “I was determined to channel my recovery into something bigger than myself.

“The physical strength and mental resilience I needed to complete this challenge were just a minor reflection of that shown by my patients in their daily battle against chronic kidney disease.”

The Nephrology Service which covers the Royal, Aintree and Broadgreen hospitals, provides specialist care for patients with kidney problems across the region, supporting thousands of people each year.

Dr Rao added: “The money raised will make a big difference to our patients, helping drive new and improved treatments.

“The Nephrology team strives to provide the best care possible to our communities, and this fundraising effort is another step in the right direction." 😊

Nicole Mcilveen, Partnership Fundraising Manager for UHL Charity, said: “What Dr Rao has achieved is truly amazing and serves as inspiration to many others. We’re proud to work with him in driving innovation and improving care for thousands of patients across Liverpool.” ❤
