Congratulations to our Breast Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) team at the Royal Liverpool Hospital who have been awarded Team of the Month. 🙌

The Breast PACS team was nominated for demonstrating dedication and persistence to streamline their pathway making significant improvement for patients.

The nomination explained: “Breast cancer patients have five years of annual mammography following their diagnosis and treatment and some women with a strong family history of breast cancer may be referred into the Breast Unit for a risk assessment and so require annual surveillance mammograms.

“This small team took on a huge project to transfer all patient surveillance cards to a paper free digital system, such a radical change that it required collaboration with other staff groups within the service, including the admin and clerical team, surgeons, radiologists, nursing and radiographic staff, supported by the QI team to input around 16,000 future follow up appointments.

“The team undertook this work over eight months alongside their normal activity, ensuring careful data transfer to achieve what now is a paper free mammography surveillance system which has reduced the scope for errors, eliminated the possibility of paperwork being mislaid and allows greater visibility of patients' pathway for all staff involved in their care.”

Judges praised: “This is a great nomination - well done to the Breast PACS Team for going above and beyond to implement a system which will see major improvements for patients”.

“Wow, what an amazing project you've achieved - you should all be very proud! The prevalence of breast cancer across our region means that sadly, we will all have some experience or understanding of this cancer and this huge piece of work and the dedication and commitment of the team will mean that we can continue to deliver the high standard of care and ongoing monitoring for so many people. Our huge thanks to you all.”

“You’ve shown initiative, embraced innovation, and continuously strive to improve the care experience, well done.” 💙

Our axess sexual health service is leading the way in HIV healthcare innovation, launching a new digital service that will deliver PrEP - a pill which reduces the risk of getting HIV by 99% when taken as prescribed - direct to patients 👏

PrEPDirect is intended to increase accessibility of preventative HIV medication for Liverpool residents and it is believed to be the only service of its kind outside of London, enabling users to access PrEP without the need for an in-person consultation.

Luke Byrne, Assistant Divisional Director of Nursing, Sexual Health and HIV at axess sexual health, said: “The launch of PrEPDirect represents an exciting step forward in Liverpool’s mission to make HIV prevention accessible to everyone.

"Thanks to the incredible support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and Liverpool City Council, we can transform how people engage with their sexual health, bringing PrEP directly to those who need it most, in ways that fit their lives.” 😊

Patients on Ward 7A and 7D at the Royal have been taking part in a spooktacular Halloween themed reconditioning activity event, with trick or treat group walks, ghost balloon badminton and sweep the spider 🎃

Reconditioning is really important for our patients, giving them the chance to socialise and engage with other people during their hospital stay, while being up and out of bed helps to maintain their muscle strength and confidence moving around, ready for when they return home 🏡

NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) is celebrating a double nomination in this year’s prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards 🤩

Liverpool Metastatic Bone Service (LiMBS) has been shortlisted for Acute Sector Innovation of the Year, whilst Cheshire and Merseyside Provider Collaborative, which involves Pharmacy teams from UHL Group, is a finalist for the Medicines, Pharmacy and Prescribing Award.

LiMBS provides care for patients whose cancer has spread from an organ, tissue or gland to the bones and is one of the busiest services of its kind in the country.

The team has been recognised for its innovative improvements in referral times, diagnostic testing and patient outcomes. Facilitating more on-demand virtual meeting means cancer clinicians are finding it easier to collaborate. Patients are now receiving the right care more quickly, often avoiding unnecessary treatments that would previously have been attempted first.

Surgical outcomes have also significantly improved. Of the 369 patients operated on this year, fewer than 2% required follow-up or corrective surgery 👏

Birender Kapoor, Orthopaedic Consultant, said: “We have worked incredibly hard to implement several service improvements, which are now bearing fruit. Whether we win the award or not, being recognised alongside so many outstanding initiatives is already a win in itself.”

The Cheshire and Merseyside Provider Collaborative has been shortlisted for its innovative, system-wide approach to addressing challenges in homecare pharmacy services, resulting in £10.2 million in savings and an improved prescription process.
Specialist pharmacists have been used to identify opportunities for more cost-effective prescribing, while ensuring medicines are used safely and appropriately by patients at home.

Pippa Roberts, Clinical Director of Pharmacy at UHL Group, said: “It is great to see this collaborative effort recognised at a national level. By working together, we are getting better outcomes for patients across Cheshire and Merseyside and have delivered substantial savings for the health economy.” 💚

Winners are announced 20 November 2025.

On Tuesday 21 October, from 8am, teams at Aintree University Hospital will conduct a decontamination training exercise outside the Emergency Department.

This planned exercise allows staff to test procedures in a realistic but controlled environment and is not in response to a live incident. Hospital services will continue as normal.

A second decontamination exercise is scheduled to take place at the Royal Liverpool Hospital on Tuesday 28 October.

Thank you to patients and visitors for their understanding while this important preparedness work takes place.

Congratulations to June Stenson, our latest Employee of the Month. 😊

June, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Royal Liverpool Hospital was nominated by a patient’s daughter for going beyond every expectation with her caring, compassionate and reliable nature throughout her mum’s cancer journey.

The nomination read: “I am nominating June for simply being a true asset to the hospital. June is a very caring, friendly, professional, honest, informative, hardworking lady with excellent listening skills that should receive the recognition she truly deserves.

“My mum had bowel cancer surgery last year and June is her surveillance nurse for the next 5 years. I take calls on behalf of my mum with her permission, due to being hard of hearing and she is not always able to understand what is said to her.

June is always very approachable and never leaves any of my questions unanswered, calling me back the same day, even if this means after her working hours have ended. She is always willing to give her time and expertise which is appreciated more than she will ever know.

“June is the whole package and makes a huge difference to our lives. I cannot rate this lady highly enough for always showing such genuine concern and interest and putting our minds at ease by being honest. June is not just caring towards my mum, she is with me too, proving she values everyone, not just her patients.

“Not all people are as approachable or as informative, but by simply being the amazing lady June is, helps makes this whole cancer experience with my mum less stressful.”💙

Colleagues from our Endoscopy service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital welcomed peers from across the country to collaborate and learn about advanced endoscopy procedures 😊

The SMART Symposium, which was attended by more than 70 delegates from across the country, was named in honour Dr Howard Smart, who recently retired after spending more than three decades caring for thousands of patients at the Royal.

The Endoscopy Unit at the Royal is one of the busiest in the country, carrying out more than 20,000 procedures each year.

Of those 20,000 procedures many are complex cases that few units in the country can provide surgery for.

As part of the symposium, several live procedures were streamed to attendees with senior clinicians at the Royal explaining and demonstrating how to best administer care 🎬

Claire Beyga, Project Coordinator for Endoscopy, said: “It was a privilege to host this event, and its success was testament to the skill and dedication of our Endoscopy colleagues.

“Having the opportunity to share learning and draw upon experiences from other teams and clinicians will only improve the care we are all able to provide to our patients here in Liverpool and across the country.

“We hope to make this an annual event and grow its influence year upon year.” 🙌
