Me low key wondering why I’ve had severe calf DOMs for the last 2 days..👀🥹

Moments like Saturday really make me reflect on how far I’ve come with my own body image over my 10 years in the fitness industry.

Many shoots that I’ve done in the past have been gym shoots over feminine, softer shoots, and even in the softer shoots I’ve done, had still been very body compositionally focussed.

Years ago, I would never be posting raw unedited shots on instagram (unless I was virtue signalling about celebrating myself even though it felt actually crippling to do because I didn’t believe it..)

I would edit the contrast so that I appeared leaner, my muscularity looked harder.
I would smooth out my skin, birth marks, stretch marks around my upper thighs.
I would hyper analyse every photo for the one where my body looked the most ideal.
I would be focussing on my body composition or muscularity only in the photo, rather than seeing the whole artistry of the photo.
I would have starved myself into a shoot.
I would have manipulated things a few days before (removed certain foods, not eaten on shoot day until it was over through fear of bloating or my tummy not being flat. FYI I had some delightful chicken selects from McDonalds driving down to this shoot on Friday evening :’) )
I would have spent the whole day pulling my stomach in.
I would have been holding myself awkwardly in shots rather than moving through and feeling the movement.

This is the most neutral I’ve ever been with food, the most I’ve ever focussed on nourishing myself and my body consistently for years, the most comfortable and proud I’ve ever been in my body, the happiest I’ve been in my wider life since working through my need to control her.

And it’s not my leanest or smallest body.

These images are a celebration of that place.

(Also the guys behind the lens have a great talent of capturing beautiful shots without unrealistic and highly edited finishes)

You absolutely do not need to micromanage your life, be hyper body focussed and push to extremes to sustain great body compositional results.

Once you shift the focus, the game truly changes.

This week is eating disorder awareness week.

Although clinical eating disorder is diagnosed through the DSM-5 guidelines, it’s important to recognise the space between normal eating, and eating disorders, that many of you may recognise.

Disordered eating sits between normal eating and eating disorders, but is not a clinically diagnosed eating disorder.

As coaches, we can impact whether we move individuals closer to normal eating, or eating disorder. And unfortunately, there are many practices and behaviours within the industry that brings individuals closer to an eating disorder, than health.

That’s why it’s important that you receive the correct support should you be expediting disordered eating symptoms, and you also know what to look for should you begin to question methods or your own relationship with food.

If you need support with over coming your own disordered eating habits, my DMs are always open, and this is the work I support people with on a 1-1 basis.

If you suspect you have an eating disorder, you can reach out to your GP, or access the website www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk

You don’t have to struggle alone 🫶🏻 🌸

Nutrition is SO much more than macronutrients.

We all know protein is important - but are you making nutrition choices for your HEALTH as well as your aesthetics?

We can run into many problems when we take nutrition advice for aesthetic outcome only (maybe from coaches or personal trainers with no nutritional qualifications, or plans online..)

Diversity in your diet matters, for your overall health, gut health/gut microbiome, quality of life, and disease prevention.

Here are a few of my staples (a world away from my diet when I used to use food solely to manipulate my body/body-build!)

*These are my personal choices based on my knowledge, and lifestyle/convenience. But hopefully this gives you some inspo of how you can diversify your protein intake to support your wider health 🫶🏻

A client this week had an incredible observation at her check in.

She spoke about how, since moving to wearing clothes that fitted her well, that weren’t tight and restricting, she has been able to recognise and listen to her hunger cues more accurately, has felt less body preoccupation, has been more present at social occasions over worrying about her body, the fit of her clothes, or the heading into the spiral of restriction around food as a result.

I also had a similar experience myself this weekend.

Upon putting on a sports bra I hadn’t worn in a while that looked great, yet felt tight restricting, increased irritability, body focus, and actually made the decision to get changed as I knew I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my training session in that’s head space.

This becomes habitual once you make the connection between physiological and psychological response.

If you’re struggling with your body image and or food relationships, ask yourself, are you clothing choices adding fuel to the fire by increasing your body preoccupation, or heightening your stress responses?

This doesn’t mean never wearing form fitting clothing, but recognising clothing that doesn’t fit well, that isn’t comfortable, that feels restrictive. Recognising how this makes you feel or behave.

Look into the green zones for ways to bring yourself back to a a more relaxed state

Remember, YOU wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear you.

Is it time that you understand and healed your relationship with food and body, for good?

‘But I definitely under ate this week, why aren’t I losing body fat?’ ⬇️

Sound familiar? Less is not more!

Appetite and energy regulation is key, even (and arguably more so!) when it comes to sustaining a calorie deficit and bringing about fat loss.

Skipping meals, leaving too long between meals, and going days under eating often has the opposite of the intended effect.

Swipe to see how skipping meals and under eating could be preventing you from making fat loss progress ➡️

I’ve had 2 different clients, who are coaches themselves, say this (or a variation of) recently.

As a coach who holds impact as one of their highest business values, this means a lot.

Coaches need coaches too (or mentors of some variety) to have someone to offer us objectivity, teach us new perspective, skills, and methods.

And the more we learn, and understand the benefit of different methods of nutrition coaching, the more strings we have to our bow to support clients in and varied ways, with a method that works for them and their challenges.

Sometimes it’s not until you feel and experience the benefit of a methodology yourself, that you can really believe in and apply it.

And the more we can learn and grow together, the more positive impact we will have on the fitness and nutrition industry as a whole 🥰🫶🏻

Alone we can make deep impact. Together we can make vast impact.

If you’re a coach and you’re struggling with your own nutritional challenges, over eating, restricting, or putting your clients needs before your own, get in touch ⬇️

We are over the moon with the feedback we have received so far from the first month of Thrive in 5!

This month we have been focussing on: Body Image.

We have a mixture of clients working through the programme from coaches using the content to support their clients with their body image, food relationships, health and hormonal health, and also clients using the course for personal use, support their own body image and food relationships, and manage challenges such as over eating.

One thing we have also seen is the coaches on the programme gaining so much on a personal level, keeping themselves accountable whilst they support their own clients. (It can be SO easy to put ourselves last as coaches/business owners!)

We couldn’t be happier with the outcome so far of this first launch, and it’s only going to improve from here 👀

Module 2 upcoming: Food Relationships
