A client this week had an incredible observation at her check in.
She spoke about how, since moving to wearing clothes that fitted her well, that weren’t tight and restricting, she has been able to recognise and listen to her hunger cues more accurately, has felt less body preoccupation, has been more present at social occasions over worrying about her body, the fit of her clothes, or the heading into the spiral of restriction around food as a result.
I also had a similar experience myself this weekend.
Upon putting on a sports bra I hadn’t worn in a while that looked great, yet felt tight restricting, increased irritability, body focus, and actually made the decision to get changed as I knew I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my training session in that’s head space.
This becomes habitual once you make the connection between physiological and psychological response.
If you’re struggling with your body image and or food relationships, ask yourself, are you clothing choices adding fuel to the fire by increasing your body preoccupation, or heightening your stress responses?
This doesn’t mean never wearing form fitting clothing, but recognising clothing that doesn’t fit well, that isn’t comfortable, that feels restrictive. Recognising how this makes you feel or behave.
Look into the green zones for ways to bring yourself back to a a more relaxed state
Remember, YOU wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear you.
Is it time that you understand and healed your relationship with food and body, for good?
