Think back as far as you can. Chances are your first memories start around age three or four, while your baby years are a blank. That isn’t because nothing happened, but because your brain wasn’t ready to store those memories the way it does later in life.

One key reason is the hippocampus, the brain’s memory hub, which takes time to fully mature. Babies can recognize familiar faces, voices, or sensations, but their hippocampal circuits are still under construction. This makes it tough to hold onto detailed, personal memories like “my first birthday.”

Another factor is language. Adults strengthen memories by attaching words and stories to them. Since babies can’t yet form narratives, their early experiences never get organized into long-lasting episodes. Without this storytelling structure, memories fade or become impossible to retrieve later.

There’s also a process called infantile amnesia. In the first few years of life, the brain is adding new neurons at a rapid pace. While this helps learning, it can also overwrite or block earlier memories. So even though your infant brain stored some events, those traces were gradually lost or hidden away.

The result is that we all lived through those baby years, but our brains simply weren’t equipped to keep the memories accessible as adults.
