How’s your toe mobility?

Most health and fitness professionals overlook the importance of proper foot and toe function. Yet, these areas—hidden away in our shoes—play a crucial role in our overall movement and well-being.

Think about it: our feet are as intricate and vital as our hands, yet we often confine them to rigid, sensory-deprived environments—similar to wearing mittens on our hands all day. Is it any wonder then that foot dysfunction is so common?

Take the big toe, for instance. It’s the driver of our foot’s mechanics, yet it often doesn’t receive the extension stress it needs due to our footwear choices. This can contribute to issues like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and anterior hip pain.

If you are experiencing these problems, consider the role of the big toe in their condition. Let’s take a step toward healthier, happier feet!

The illustration simply highlights the ideal range of motion, although the range of motion in the top, is hard to reach, it should be a good guideline and something we ALL had from childhood 😊

45° and above is an ideal range of motion in our toes, anything under this should have daily mobility drills applied to improve range of motion.

Have a great weekend

A large part of my role as a Foot Health Practitioner is about advice and education. When talking to clients, I try to put things in terms that mean something to the person so they understand. We have all had people speak to us in terms that mean nothing to us.

I was trying to explain to a client about cracked heels this week
This lady loves to cook, so I thought long before asking her 'what do feet and a ball of pastry dough have in common?'
It's simple when you think about it.
Dough is at its best when moist. When it has the right amount of moisture, you can put it under pressure, it is flexible, and it doesn't crack. Wrap it up and it maintains its moisture. Leave it exposed to the air and it dries out. Once it dries out, under pressure it develops cracks, add water, knead it and you can salvage it once again.
Now think of your feet.
The right amount of moisture, and your skin is supple and flexes as you step.
Keep your feet/heels covered in socks or enclosed shoes and the moisture is maintained
Leave them exposed to the elements (such as being bare foot, in flip flops or open heeled shoes) and the skin dries out. Add moisture at this point, and they can regain their suppleness. Leave them unmoisturised and under the pressure of walking exposed to the air and just like the dough they will crack.
I dare say she has never had it explained that way before! (or that she will ever see pastry dough the same ever again!)
